Chapter 8 - The Abduction

Smoke filled the cab of the overturned SUV. Isla’s head throbbed with blinding pain. She looked beside her—Dominic was unconscious, blood streaming down the side of his face from a deep gash near his temple.
“Dominic!” she cried out, trying to shake him awake, but the passenger door was brutally ripped open from the outside.
Rough hands grabbed her by the arms, dragging her screaming out onto the asphalt.
“Got the girl!” a harsh voice barked.
Isla kicked and fought, her nurse’s instincts kicking into overdrive, but she was overpowered by three heavy enforcers wearing black masks—Moretti’s men.
“Leave him!” the leader shouted, pointing a gun at Dominic’s bleeding body inside the wrecked car. “Don Moretti said the girl is the key! If we have the girl, Ashford will surrender his entire empire to get her back!”
“No! Dominic!” Isla screamed, fighting wildly as a black sack was thrown over her head.

She was shoved into the back of a van, her hands bound tightly behind her back with heavy plastic zip-ties. The van sped away into the night, leaving behind the burning wreck on the highway.
In the dark interior of the speeding van, Isla took a deep, shuddering breath. Her fear was overwhelming, but underneath it, something fierce and unbreakable began to ignite. She was no longer just a terrified nurse from the West Side. She was the anchor of the Phantom King, and she refused to let them use her to destroy him.
