Chapter 7 - The Final Ledger

Two months later, the winter snows began to melt away, leaving the streets of Chicago wet and gleaming under the pale spring sun.

The black leather ledger sat on Arthur’s desk in the study—not hidden beneath floorboards or locked in a panic room, but resting openly beside a stack of legitimate corporate acquisition contracts for the newly formed Callahan Logistics Group.

Arthur sat behind his desk, reviewing the final audit reports sent over by federal prosecutors. Declan Ror’s trial was scheduled for the summer, and with Bianca’s airtight digital paper trail, the prosecution's case was impenetrable. Declan would spend the rest of his natural life behind bars, completely stripped of his wealth, his influence, and his freedom.

There was a soft knock at the study door.

"Come in," Arthur said without looking up.

The door opened, and Bianca stepped inside. She was wearing a simple navy blazer and dark trousers, looking every bit the professional investigator she had once been, yet carrying the warmth of someone who had truly found her place in the world.

"The logistics manifests for the port of Montreal just cleared," Bianca said, holding out a digital tablet. "No discrepancies. The transition is officially complete, Arthur. You are completely out of the syndicate business."

Arthur took the tablet, setting it down beside the black ledger. He leaned back in his leather chair, looking up at her with a steady, searching gaze.

"You haven't mentioned leaving," Arthur noted quietly. "The threat is gone. The house is secure. You could go anywhere, Bianca. Back to the agency, or a quiet consultancy firm anywhere in the country."

Bianca walked over to the desk, resting her hand lightly on the back of the visitor's chair. She didn't look away from his eyes.

"I didn't come here for an assignment, Arthur," she said softly. "And I didn't stay just because of the danger. When I lost my unit, I lost my sense of purpose. I thought justice was just a set of rules written on paper that powerful men could rewrite whenever it suited them."

She gestured toward the room, toward the quiet hum of the house, toward the faint sound of Enzo laughing downstairs with his speech therapist.

"Here... I found something worth protecting. Something real."

Arthur stood up from his desk. He walked around it, stopping just inches from her. The distance between them had vanished weeks ago, replaced by a deep, unspoken bond forged in the crucible of betrayal and survival.

"I don't know how to be a normal man, Bianca," Arthur murmured, his voice uncharacteristically vulnerable. "My hands are stained. I’ve built an empire on blood and fear."

"Then let’s build something new," Bianca whispered, reaching out to rest her hand against his chest, right over his heart. "Together."

Arthur covered her hand with his own, pulling her closer as the afternoon sun poured through the study windows, casting a warm, golden glow over the room where everything had once seemed hopelessly lost.
