Chapter 8 - The First Morning

The following Sunday morning arrived with a stillness that felt entirely different from the heavy, suffocating quiet of the past.

There were no security alerts flashing on the monitors. There were no midnight alarms, no hidden ledgers, no assassins waiting in the dark.

Down in the massive kitchen, the smell of fresh coffee and toasted brioche filled the air. Arthur stood by the stove, flipping pancakes with a clumsy, unpracticed motion that would have shocked any of his syndicate capos if they could see him now.

Enzo sat at the island, coloring in a new book while humming a quiet, cheerful tune to himself.

Bianca walked into the kitchen, wearing a soft cream-colored sweater, her hair falling loosely around her shoulders. She smiled as she watched Arthur struggle slightly with a flipping spatula, causing a pancake to land slightly askew on the plate.

"Recovery specialist, tactical operative, expert investigator," Bianca teased gently, leaning against the counter beside him. "And yet, the simple art of breakfast remains beyond your grasp."

Arthur glanced sideways at her, a rare, genuine smile touching his lips. He scooped up the slightly deformed pancake and placed it on a separate plate for himself, sliding the perfect one over to Enzo.

"Some tactical challenges require specialized training," Arthur replied smoothly, wrapping his arm around her waist and pulling her close against his side.

Enzo looked up from his coloring book, his big hazel eyes taking in the scene before him. He smiled, pointing a green crayon toward his father and Bianca.

"Family," Enzo said clearly, his voice steady and strong.

Arthur froze for a fraction of a second, the word echoing in his chest with a resonance that eclipsed every victory, every dollar, and every triumph of his past life. He looked down at Bianca, whose eyes were bright with unshed tears of pure joy, before looking back at his son.

"Yes, buddy," Arthur said, his voice thick with emotion as he tightened his arm around Bianca and reached out to ruffle Enzo’s dark curls. "Family."

Outside the high fortress windows, Lake Michigan stretched out toward the horizon—vast, deep, and brilliant under the morning sun. The dark waters of the past were gone, replaced by an open, endless expanse of possibility. The shadows that had haunted the Callahan estate had finally been burned away by the light, leaving behind a home, a future, and a life that no enemy could ever touch again.
