Chapter 4 - The Siege of the West Wing

Luciano didn't hesitate.

In a single fluid motion, he pulled a heavy mahogany panel beside the fireplace, revealing a concealed iron gun safe. He pulled out a black tactical sidearm, checked the magazine with a mechanical click, and chambered a round before turning back to Chloe.

"Under the floorboards in the private office," Luciano commanded, his tone transforming instantly back into that of a commander in a war zone. "There is a reinforced panic room. You go there now."

"What about you?" Chloe asked, her previous anger instantly swallowed by a wave of cold, sharp panic.

"I am going to remind Don Bellini why no one attacks my home," Luciano said flatly.

He grabbed her by the shoulders, pulling her flush against his body. For a fraction of a second, his mouth found hers—a dark, fierce, possessing kiss that tasted of cedar and absolute promises. It lasted only two heartbeats, but it left Chloe breathless, her knees weak against the hard floor.

"Go, Chloe," he ordered, pulling back and thrusting her toward the hidden office door. "Now!"

Outside, the heavy thud of automatic rifle fire suddenly shattered the quiet afternoon, followed by the deep explosion of a grenade near the front gates.

Chloe didn't run to the panic room.

As soon as Luciano strode out of the library with two armed guards falling into step behind him, Chloe ducked into the private hallway connecting the library to the estate's central monitoring hub.

She wasn't the weak, frightened girl who had dropped a leather folder two days ago. Finding out her real identity hadn't made her feel like a victim—it had awakened a deep, stubborn fire inside her chest that had been buried beneath years of survival.

In the security room, two young technicians were frantically watching a wall of black-and-white monitors.

"Where are they?" Chloe demanded, stepping into the room.

The technicians jumped, turning to stare at her in shock. "Mrs. Costa! You're supposed to be in the vault!"

"Where are Bellini’s men?" she repeated, stepping up to the main display console.

One technician pointed to a camera feed showing the west conservatory. "They bypassed the main driveway, ma'am. They used heavy trucks to breach the glasshouse walls. There are at least fifteen armed men inside the west wing. Don Luciano and Rocco are heading down the main gallery to cut them off, but—"

"But Bellini’s men are coming up through the service elevators," Chloe finished, her eyes narrowing as she spotted three armed men in black tactical gear moving up a narrow staircase on monitor four.

She knew that staircase. She had scrubbed those concrete steps every Thursday morning for eight months.

"That staircase leads directly behind the main armory where Luciano’s men store their heavy ammunition," Chloe said rapidly. "If Bellini takes the armory, Luciano will be flanked from both sides."

"We can't get a message to Don Luciano," the technician panicked. "The radio jammers Bellini brought are scrambling our internal comms!"

Chloe grabbed a heavy brass fire extinguisher resting against the security room wall, testing its weight in her hands.

"Override the security lock on door 4B," she ordered the technician.

"Ma'am? That's the service access!"

"Override it!" she shouted, a pure, dangerous authority ringing in her voice that made the technician instantly slap his palm onto the emergency release button.

Three minutes later, the narrow, dimly lit service corridor behind the west armory was filled with the smell of dust and gun smoke.

Three of Bellini’s mercenaries were creeping quietly toward the iron door of the armory, their rifles raised.

"Clear left," the lead gunman whispered, stepping past the narrow alcove where the industrial linen hampers were stored.

Suddenly, a heavy steel linen cart, weighted down with three hundred pounds of wet towels and copper buckets, came barreling out of the dark alcove at full speed.

It slammed directly into the lead gunman, smashing his knees with a sickening crunch and sending him crashing against the concrete wall.

Before the second gunman could swing his rifle around, Chloe lunged out from behind the cart, wielding the heavy brass fire extinguisher like a battering ram. She swung it with all the force of her curved hips and powerful legs, striking the second man square across the side of his helmet.

The metal struck with a loud, ringing crack. The man crumpled to the floor, unconscious.

The third mercenary turned, raising his hand to strike her with the butt of his rifle—but he froze.

Standing at the end of the hall, covered in dust, holding a smoking tactical shotgun in one hand and looking like the devil himself, was Luciano Costa.

Luciano didn't say a word. He fired once.

The third mercenary dropped instantly.

Silence returned to the narrow corridor, broken only by the hum of the ventilation fans and Chloe’s heavy, ragged breathing. She dropped the brass fire extinguisher with a loud metallic thud, leaning against the concrete wall, her chest heaving.

Luciano walked slowly down the corridor, stepping over the fallen men, his eyes fixed entirely on Chloe.

He stopped inches away from her. He looked at the heavy cart, looked at the unconscious gunman, and then looked at her dirty, dusty face.

"You used a linen cart," Luciano said, his voice strangely tight.

"It was heavy," Chloe panted, wiping a smudge of grease off her cheek. "And I told you... I know this house better than anyone."

Luciano let out a long, ragged breath. He reached out, taking her face in both of his big, rough hands, pulling her against his chest with a strength that almost bruised her ribs.

"You are completely insane," he growled against her hair, his body trembling faintly with an adrenaline crash he rarely experienced. "You are reckless, stubborn, and completely insane."

"I'm a Costa," Chloe whispered into his shirt, her arms wrapping around his muscular waist. "Apparently... I’ve been one for seven years."

May you like

Luciano pulled back slightly, looking down into her bright hazel eyes, a dark, dangerous smile slowly spreading across his face.

"Yes," he whispered, kissing her fiercely on the lips as gunshots echoed faintly from the far courtyard. "Yes, you have."
