Chapter 4 - The Black Water

For nearly two hours, the only sound in the salon was the rhythmic, relentless clip of the shears and the soft thuds of hair hitting the floor.

When the final mass—a solid, seventy-pound block of tangled history—was severed, it struck the marble floor with a sound so heavy that the chandelier above them softly jingled.

The woman gasped. Her head snapped upward, suddenly weightless. She reached up with a trembling, dirty hand, touching the light, short tufts of dark hair that remained on her scalp, barely reaching her shoulders. She looked lighter, fragile, yet somehow instantly more present in the room.

“To the basin,” Pierre whispered softly, his demeanor entirely changed. The disgust had completely evaporated, replaced by an intense, quiet curiosity.

They gently guided her to the washing station. She leaned her head back into the black porcelain bowl, her eyes fixed fearfully on the ceiling.

When the warm water hit her scalp, she let out a tiny, soft whimpering sound, closing her eyes as the heat washed over her cold skin. A young assistant named Mia gently rubbed a rich lather of oil and lavender soap into the remaining strands, carefully separating the knots that had survived the blades.

The water running down the drain turned instantly black.

It flowed thick and dark, carrying away years of soot, alley dust, diesel exhaust, and cold rain. Bowl after bowl was filled and drained, layer by layer, as the dark crust that had disguised her features was dissolved by the warm stream.

Dante stood a few feet away, leaning against the wall despite the burning pain in his bandaged chest. He didn't take his eyes off her for a single second.

As the grime washed away, her true skin began to appear. It was pale, delicate, and fine-grained—not the rough, weathered hide of a lifelong street inhabitant, but the soft, aristocratic skin of someone who had grown up shielded from the sun, raised in air-conditioned mansions and covered in fine silk.

Mia used a soft cloth to gently wipe the layer of dark soot from the woman's neck, moving down toward her collarbone.

Suddenly, Mia stopped. Her breath caught in her throat.

“Mr. Pierre…” Mia whispered, her voice shaking violently. “Look at this.”
