Chapter 5 - The Mark of the Butterfly

Pierre stepped over quickly, taking a wet towel and carefully wiping away the remaining grey film beneath the woman’s left collarbone.
Dante pushed himself away from the wall, his dark eyes narrowing as he took three sharp steps toward the basin.
Beneath the years of accumulated urban filth, etched into the soft, milky-white skin just above her heart, was a distinct, raised mark. It was a rare birthmark, shaped precisely like a butterfly with asymmetrical, delicate wings—a physical signature that no surgical procedure could perfectly replicate.
Pierre’s face drained of all color. His hands began to shake so badly that he dropped the damp towel into the basin.
“Mon Dieu…” Pierre choked out, stumbling back a step. “It’s… it’s not possible. She died ten years ago.”
“Who is she?” Dante demanded, his voice dropping into an icy, dangerous register that demanded immediate truth.
Pierre pulled out his phone with trembling fingers, his hands slippery with soap. He rapidly tapped on the screen, opening an archived news article from a decade prior. He held the screen out toward Dante.
The headline, dated eight years ago, blared in bold white text against a black background:
VANISHED IN THE ATLANTIC: HEIRESS AURORA VANE PRONOUNCED DEAD AFTER YACHT EXPLOSION. $4 BILLION VANE ESTATE TRANSFERRED TO TRUSTEES.
Below the headline was a high-resolution photograph of an eighteen-year-old girl attending a high-society gala in Paris. She had striking violet-blue eyes, a radiant, gentle smile, and soft, shoulder-length dark hair. And on her exposed left shoulder, clearly visible above the neckline of her silk gown, was the exact same butterfly birthmark.
Dante looked from the glowing screen to the quiet, frail woman sitting in the wash basin.
The woman who had been living under cardboard boxes in cold alleys, dragging two meters of her own matted hair through the dirt, was Aurora Vane—the sole heir to the Vane Maritime Empire, a global shipping conglomerate worth billions of dollars, believed to have perished in a fiery explosion off the coast of Rhode Island.

The room fell into an absolute, suffocating silence.
Aurora slowly opened her eyes. She looked at Dante, then down at the phone screen reflecting her former life, and a single, crystal-clear tear tracked through the remaining dust on her pale cheek.
