Chapter 8 - SHADOWS OF THE PAST

Two weeks passed smoothly. Faith began her work at Mount Sinai Hospital, throwing herself into her duties with dedication and skill.

The cardiac care unit was fast-paced and emotionally draining, but Faith excelled. Her gentle bedside manner and sharp medical instincts earned her the respect of both the senior doctors and her fellow nurses.

Every night after her shift ended at 7:00 AM, Marco was waiting at the hospital entrance in the dark sedan to drive her back to the Moretti estate.

Living at the mansion had become a comfortable routine. She and Francesco shared late-afternoon breakfasts or late-night teas, depending on their schedules. Their conversations grew deeper, spanning art, history, medicine, and their differing views on the world.

Faith began to see the complex man beneath the formidable reputation. Francesco was fiercely loyal to his subordinates, generous to his community, and driven by a strict personal code of honor. He was not a senseless criminal; he was a leader who maintained order in a chaotic world.

However, the reality of Francesco’s world soon invaded their quiet sanctuary.

One chilly Tuesday morning, as Faith was wrapping up her shift at the hospital, the emergency doors burst open. Paramedics rushed a man on a gurney into the trauma bay, yelling out vital signs.

“Gunshot wound to the abdomen! Blood pressure dropping rapidly!”

Faith instinctively rushed forward to assist the trauma team. As she reached the gurney, her heart stopped.

The man bleeding heavily on the gurney was Lorenzo—one of Francesco’s top lieutenants, a man who regularly guarded the front gate of the estate.

“Faith...” Lorenzo gasped, recognizing her through his bloodied vision. “Tell... tell the boss... it was the Marcone family. They’re moving on... the docks...”

“Don't talk, Lorenzo,” Faith commanded sharply, her medical training taking over immediately. “Apply pressure here! Get two units of O-negative blood, now!”

For the next three hours, Faith assisted the surgical team in stabilizing Lorenzo. She worked with calm, mechanical precision, ignoring the blood staining her scrubs and the sheer terror gripping her heart.

As soon as Lorenzo was moved to the Intensive Care Unit in stable condition, Faith hurried to the breakroom and dialed Francesco’s private number.

He answered on the first ring. “Faith? Are you alright?”

“I’m fine,” she said, her voice shaking slightly now that the adrenaline was fading. “Francesco... Lorenzo is here at Mount Sinai. He was shot in the abdomen.”

A sharp intake of breath sounded over the line. “Is he alive?”

“Yes. We stabilized him in surgery. He’s in the ICU now.” Faith paused, dropping her voice to a whisper. “Before he went into surgery, he gave me a message for you. He said it was the Marcone family. He said they’re moving on the docks.”

A heavy, terrifying silence fell over the line. When Francesco spoke again, his voice was like ice.

“Stay at the hospital, Faith. Do not leave the floor. I am sending additional security to guard both you and Lorenzo.”

“Francesco, please be careful,” Faith begged, her hand tightening around the phone. “The Marcone family... this means war, doesn't it?”

“It means I am going to finish this,” Francesco replied quietly. “I will see you tonight, Faith. I promise.”
