Chapter 5 - The Locked Vault

The fourth-floor panic room was a masterpiece of modern security engineering. Reinforced with six inches of solid steel, bulletproof glass, independent oxygen filtration, and private satellite communications, it was designed to withstand a full military siege.

Inside, Isabelle sat on a plush velvet sofa, holding a mug of warm tea. Sophie was fast asleep beside her, wrapped in a fleece blanket, her little rabbit tucked securely under her arm.

Frank Lombardi stood near the heavy steel door, his arms crossed over his chest, his eyes fixed on the security monitors that displayed camera feeds from across the estate.

"He looks just like your father, you know," Frank said softly, breaking the quiet.

Isabelle looked up from her tea. "My father?"

"Don Lorenzo Russo," Frank smiled gently, nostalgia softening his worn face. "He was a powerful man, but when you were born, he turned into a soft touch. He built the garden playground out back just for you. When you disappeared... it destroyed him. He died of a broken heart three years later."

Tears welled in Isabelle’s eyes. "I wish I could remember him, Frank. I wish I could remember any of it."

"It'll come back, child," Frank reassured her gently. "Or maybe it won't, and that's okay too. What matters is that you're back home. Dominic won't let anyone hurt you ever again."

The monitor on the wall flashed green, and the heavy steel door hummed as the electronic locks disengaged.

Dominic stepped into the room. His suit jacket was gone, his white shirt sleeves rolled up to his elbows, his knuckles bruised and red.

Isabelle stood up immediately, her heart racing. "Dominic? Is he gone?"

"Christopher has been taken into custody by my personal security team," Dominic said, walking over to her. "He is currently locked in the basement cellar under two-man guard. He won't be leaving this property."

Isabelle swallowed hard. "What... what are you going to do with him?"

"That depends on you, Isabelle," Dominic said, stopping right in front of her. "He stole twenty-five years of your life. He committed federal kidnapping, extortion, and corporate fraud. I can hand him over to the authorities with enough evidence to put him away for the rest of his life... or I can handle him the way our family usually handles traitors."

Isabelle looked down at her sleeping daughter, then looked back at her long-lost brother. She saw the pain in Dominic’s eyes—the weight of twenty-five years of guilt, anger, and loneliness he had carried on his shoulders while running a criminal empire.

"No more violence, Dominic," Isabelle said softly, reaching out to take his bruised hand in hers. "He took enough from our family. Don't let him turn you into a monster. Give him to the police. Let him spend the rest of his days rotting in a cage, knowing that we survived and that our family is whole again."

Dominic looked at his sister, marveling at her strength and her grace. Despite everything she had endured—the poverty, the confusion, the years of hard labor—she possessed a moral clarity that he had lost long ago in the bloody war for control of Chicago.

"As you wish, little sister," Dominic whispered, leaning down to press a gentle kiss to her forehead.

Suddenly, the security monitor on the wall erupted in a bright red flash. A loud, piercing alarm chimed through the panic room.

Frank rushed to the screen, his face instantly turning pale. "Boss! We’ve got a breach at the main gate! Three armored SUVs just rammed through the iron doors!"

Dominic snapped his head toward the monitor. The camera feed showed dozens of armed men in tactical gear pouring onto the estate grounds, firing automatic weapons at the house security team.

"Who is it?!" Dominic roared.

Frank zoomed in on the lead vehicle’s registration plate, his jaw dropping in horror. "It's New York, Boss! Victor Moretti’s crew! Christopher must have alerted them before he came upstairs! They're here to clean house!"
