Chapter 10 - The Sovereign Stars

That evening, the estate was quiet and peaceful.
The amber glow of the Christmas tree in the grand foyer reflected off the tall glass windows, casting warm light across the marble floor where blood had been spilled months before. Now, the room smelled of pine needles, cinnamon, and fresh-baked cookies.
Isabelle sat on the velvet sofa near the fireplace, sipping a glass of wine, watching Sophie play with a new set of wooden building blocks near the hearth.
Dominic walked over and sat down beside his sister, setting two glasses on the coffee table.
"The board approved the new shelter project in Peoria today," Dominic said, leaning back against the cushions. "We're breaking ground in the spring."
Isabelle looked at him, her grey eyes filled with deep affection. "You've changed so much, Dominic. The men who used to fear your name... now they respect you for what you're building."
"I didn't change, Isabelle," Dominic said softly, looking at the fire. "I just finally found what I was fighting for. For twenty-five years, I thought my job was to protect an empire. But the empire was nothing. It was just stone and money built on grief."
He turned to look at her, touching the silver pendant around her neck. "This was the only empire that mattered."
Isabelle smiled, placing her hand over his.
Sophie ran over to the couch, holding up a small block she had carved with her uncle's help earlier that week. On the surface of the wood, she had drawn a crude, cute little crescent with three tiny stars.
"Look, Mommy! Look, Uncle Dominic! I drew our star!" Sophie cheered proudly.

Dominic laughed, picking up his niece and settling her between them on the velvet couch. He pulled the warm wool blanket over the three of them as the snow fell softly outside against the dark glass of Lake Michigan.
The dark legacy of the Russo family was gone, buried forever beneath the snows of the past. In its place stood a family restored, a sister reclaimed, and three sovereign stars that would guide their way into a bright, peaceful future.
