Chapter 7 - The Ledger of Retribution

Sasha’s fingers shook as she broke the red wax seal and pulled out the thick stack of legal documents inside.

The top document was a certified federal indictment issued by the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. It listed thirty-seven counts of interstate wire fraud, extortion, identity theft, and physical assault under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO).

Beneath the indictment was a detailed law enforcement file containing years of evidence—bank statements, fraudulent credit applications, recorded phone calls, and sworn statements from six different women across three states whom Derek had scammed, abused, and robbed over the last decade.

"How..." Sasha whispered, her eyes skimming the technical legal jargon on the pages. "How did you get this?"

Viktor walked over to the bar, poured himself a glass of water, and took a slow sip before turning back to face her.

"Men like Derek think they are clever because they prey on vulnerable people who are too scared or too exhausted to go to the police," Viktor explained, his voice calm and methodical. "They leave a trail of broken lives, small debts, and stolen identities behind them, assuming no one will ever take the time to put the pieces together."

He walked back over to her, standing directly beside her as she read through the horrific pages of Derek’s past activities.

"My team spent forty-eight hours gathering every victim he ever touched," Viktor continued smoothly. "We tracked down his old bank accounts, his fake social security numbers, his illegal gambling ledgers in Cicero. We packaged it into a bulletproof federal RICO file and handed it directly to the Special Assistant United States Attorney in Chicago."

Sasha looked up from the papers, her eyes wide with shock. "You gave evidence to the federal government?"

Viktor chuckled softly—a low, dark sound. "The federal prosecutor owes me three favors regarding port zoning laws. When I dropped a slam-dunk interstate fraud case onto his desk that guarantees him a high-profile conviction on local television, he was more than happy to sign the arrest warrants tonight at midnight."

He reached out, his long fingers gently taking the legal file from her hands and setting it down on the side table.

"Federal marshals raided his card game in Cicero at one o'clock AM," Viktor said, his voice dropping into a rough whisper. "He was dragged out in handcuffs in front of everyone he owed money to. Because of the RICO enhancements and his history of physical violence against women, he will be serving his sentence in a federal penitentiary where he will be known as a violent predator."

Viktor stepped closer, his thumb rising to brush softly against her left jawbone—the place where Derek had broken her bone five years ago.

"He will spend the next fifteen years behind steel bars, Sasha," Viktor murmured, his gray eyes locking onto hers with absolute intensity. "Every morning when he wakes up in a concrete cell, every night when the lights go out, he will know that he is there because he put his hands on the wrong woman."

Sasha stood frozen. The sheer, terrifying brilliance of what Viktor had done washed over her in relentless waves. He hadn't just used brute force to kill her abuser; he had used his immense, terrifying network of power, law, and corruption to systematically dismantle Derek's entire existence, ensuring he was punished through the very legal system that had failed her years ago.

He had destroyed Derek far more completely than a bullet ever could.

Tears finally overflowed Sasha’s lashes, spilling down her pale cheeks. But they were not tears of fear or grief; they were the terrifying, overwhelming release of five years of accumulated pain, shame, and hidden terror finally evaporating into the air.

Viktor did not move away. He stood there, holding her face in his broad, warm hands, wiping her tears away with his thumbs with an astonishing, fierce tenderness.

"He is gone, Sasha," Viktor whispered against her forehead. "His ghost is dead."
