Chapter 8 - The Bare Finger

The morning after the arrest, the penthouse was bathed in a clear, brilliant gold light.

The rainstorm had passed entirely, leaving the Chicago sky pale blue and clear over the shimmering blue water of Lake Michigan.

Sasha woke up late in the massive master bed. For the first time in five years, she had slept through the entire night without a single nightmare. There were no visions of dark hallways, no terrifying sounds of cracking bone, no sudden gasps of panic in the dark. Her mind felt astonishingly quiet, light, and still.

She sat up, wrapping the high-thread-count white linen sheet around her shoulders, and looked down at her left hand resting against the duvet.

The middle finger was pale, smooth, and bare. The red mark left by Viktor’s forceful removal of the ring was completely gone. In its place was nothing—no metal, no cage, no lingering mark of the past.

She slid out of bed, slipped on a soft cashmere robe, and walked out into the living room.

Viktor was sitting at his grand mahogany desk, wearing a dark gray dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows, reviewing a stack of shipping manifests. A fresh cup of black coffee sat beside his tablet.

He looked up the moment she walked into the room. His gray eyes tracked her movement across the hardwood floor, searching her face with quiet, vigilant intensity.

"Good morning," Viktor said, his voice low and smooth.

"Good morning," she replied softly.

She walked over to his desk, stopping beside his chair. Viktor rotated slightly in his seat, reaching out to take her bare hand in his massive palm. He lifted her hand, his thumb stroking the smooth, bare skin of her middle finger where the silver band used to reside.

"How do you feel?" he asked softly.

Sasha looked down at their joined hands—his massive, scarred, powerful hand wrapped protectively around hers.

"I feel... lighter," she admitted truthfully. "Like I can finally breathe without expecting the ceiling to collapse."

Viktor nodded slowly, a look of profound satisfaction settling into his sharp features. He reached into his desk drawer, pulled out a small, velvet-lined mahogany box, and set it on the blotter in front of her.

Sasha looked at the box, then looked up into his eyes. "Viktor..."

"Open it," he commanded quietly. "It is not a gift. It is an offer."

Sasha reached out, her fingers touching the cool mahogany wood of the small box. She flipped the brass latch open and lifted the lid.

Inside, resting against dark black velvet, was a single ring.

It was not a cheap silver band from a pawnshop, nor was it a flashy, vulgar diamond meant to parade his wealth to his mob associates. It was a flawless, custom-crafted band made of dark, heavy platinum, inlaid with a single, deep blue sapphire that caught the morning sunlight and threw soft, ocean-blue reflections across her fingers. It was dark, elegant, powerful, and utterly unique.

"It was forged yesterday by a private jeweler on Jewelers Row," Viktor said, his voice dropping into a low, hypnotic register. "The sapphire comes from a mine in Sri Lanka. It is indestructible."

Sasha stared down at the stunning piece of art.

"You do not have to wear it to hide from the world, Sasha," Viktor said, his dark eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that made her breath catch. "You do not have to wear it as armor or as a reminder of pain. If you put this ring on your finger, you wear it because you choose to stand beside me. Not behind me. Not beneath me. Beside me."

May you like

He leaned closer, his chest pressing lightly against her hip.

"And if any man in this city—politician, captain, or stranger—looks at your hand, he will know that touching you means declaring war on the entire Morozov empire."
