Chapter 7 - Blood in the Alley

The firefight in the hallway was short, violent, and absolute.
Dante moved with the terrifying speed of a seasoned killer, utilizing the narrow walls of the apartment building to eliminate Marco's forward guards before they could throw explosives into the room.
Outside on the street, sirens began to wail in the distance—a chorus of police cruisers responding to the gunshots echoing through the old city.
"Dante!" Karl’s voice—Dante's chief of security—echoed from the street below, followed by the heavy roar of automatic rifle fire as Valente’s main security detail arrived on Via Lincoln, sweeping Marco’s perimeter team off the pavement.
Inside the apartment, the smoke was so thick it burned Arya’s eyes.
She lifted her head from her mother’s chest. "Mom? Mom, are you okay?"
Elena was gasping, her face pale, but she nodded weakly. "Go... check on your father..."
Arya stood up, her legs trembling, clutching her brass lamp like a club. She stepped carefully over shattered plaster and spent brass shell casings into the hallway.
Dante stood near the shattered front door. His leather jacket was torn at the shoulder, a smear of dark blood staining his grey sweater, but his hand was steady as he kept his pistol pointed down the concrete stairwell.
A trail of blood led down the stone steps.
"He's hit," Dante said smoothly, his eyes fixed on the blood trail. "Marco."
"Dante, the police are coming!" Arya shouted over the distant sirens. "You have to leave!"
Dante turned his head, looking at her through the haze of gun smoke. His eyes were dark, burning with a lethal resolve. "I am not leaving Marco alive to hunt you again, Arya. Stay here with your mother. Karl's men are securing the apartment right now."
Before she could stop him, Dante sprinted down the stairwell, following the trail of blood down into the dark underbelly of the building.
"Dante! No!" Arya cried out.
She couldn't stay behind. She couldn't watch her father run into a trap.
Arya turned back to the bedroom. Two heavily armed men in dark tactical suits—Dante’s inner guard—were already entering through the shattered front door, taking defensive positions around Elena’s bed.
"Protect her with your lives!" Arya commanded the guards, her voice echoing with a natural authority that made both men nod instantly.
Arya turned and ran down the stairs after her father.
The ground floor of the building was a warzone. Broken glass, shattered wood, and fallen men littered the entry foyer. The heavy rear door leading to the back alley stood wide open, swinging on its rusted hinges in the sea breeze.
Arya stepped out into the dark, damp rear alleyway.
The rain had returned, falling in cold, heavy sheets over the wet stone walls.
At the far end of the narrow alleyway, trapped against a tall iron gate that blocked the dead-end street, was Marco Valente. He was clutching a bleeding gunshot wound in his side, his grey suit soaked in rain and blood. His gun lay on the cobblestones five feet out of his reach.
Dante stood ten feet away from him, advancing slowly, his black pistol raised, pointed directly between Marco’s eyes.
"It ends here, Uncle," Dante spoke, his voice cutting through the sound of the falling rain.
Marco collapsed back against the iron gate, coughing blood, his cold blue eyes finally filling with terror as he stared down the barrel of his nephew's gun. "Dante... please... we are blood! Your father... your father would not want this!"
"My father died because you fed him to the rival families!" Dante spat, his voice laced with decades of accumulated rage. "You lied to me for twenty-four years! You made me believe my wife and child were ash! You tried to murder my daughter thirty minutes ago!"
"She's a bastard!" Marco spat, his composure breaking into desperate malice. "She doesn't belong in this world! If you kill me, my loyalists will tear Palermo apart to hunt her down!"
Dante took one step closer, his finger tightening against the trigger. "Let them try."
"Dante, wait!"
Arya’s voice echoed down the alleyway.
Dante didn't lower his weapon, but his eyes flicked sideways for a fraction of a second as Arya ran up behind him, her wool coat soaked through with rain.
"Arya, get back inside," Dante commanded harshly. "This isn't something you need to see."
"Don't do it like this," Arya pleaded, reaching out and placing her hand gently against Dante’s arm—the arm holding the gun.
Dante froze. The touch of his daughter's hand against his soaked leather jacket was a shock to his system.
"He deserves to die, Arya," Dante said, his voice trembling with dark emotion. "He stole twenty-four years of our lives."
"I know he does!" Arya cried out over the rain. "I hate him for what he did to my mother! But if you execute him in cold blood in an alleyway, you are giving him exactly what he wants—he turns you into a monster in front of your daughter!"
Dante stared down at her. His dark eyes—so cold, so lethal—searched her grey eyes. He saw no fear of him in her face. He saw only love, grief, and a desperate plea for his soul.
"Look at me, Dad," Arya whispered, using the word for the very first time in her life.
Dante’s breath caught in his throat. The word—Dad—hit him harder than any bullet ever could. His hand trembled slightly around the heavy grip of the gun.
"Don't let him take any more from us," Arya begged softly. "Let Karl take him. Let him rot in a dark cell for the rest of his miserable life."
For three agonizing seconds, the only sound in the alleyway was the heavy falling rain and Marco's labored breathing against the iron gate.
Slowly... agonizingly... Dante lowered the barrel of his gun.
He looked at Marco with absolute, cold disdain. "You are not worthy of my bullet, old man."
Dante turned his back on his uncle, wrapping his heavy arm around Arya's shoulders, pulling her close against his side to protect her from the rain.
"Karl!" Dante called out.
Karl stepped into the alleyway with four heavily armed men. "Sir?"
"Take Marco," Dante ordered coldly. "Put him in the subterranean vault on the estate. Ensure he receives basic medical care. He will spend the remainder of his days listening to the ocean he will never see again."

"Understood, Boss," Karl replied, dragging a screaming, cursing Marco off the cobblestones.
Dante walked with Arya back toward the building, his heavy arm around her, shielding his daughter from the storm.
