Chapter 10 - THE FOREVER VOW

That evening, the sun dipped below the mountains, painting the lake in brilliant shades of violet, gold, and deep orange.

A small, private dinner was set on the edge of the villa’s lower garden dock.

The water lapped gently against the stone steps, and lantern light flickered softly in the gentle evening breeze.

Matteo and Elena sat close together on a cushioned bench, wrapped in a shared blanket, watching the stars begin to appear in the clear Italian sky.

For three years, this villa had been a place of quiet agony—a grand prison where two people who loved each other lived like strangers in opposite wings. Tonight, it was filled with warmth, music, and the soft, steady rhythm of two hearts finally beating as one.

Matteo pulled a small velvet box from his coat pocket.

Elena looked at him in surprise. “What is that?”

Matteo opened the box. Inside lay a breathtaking diamond ring, its central stone surrounded by intricate platinum bands forged in the shape of olive branches—the universal symbol of peace.

“Three years ago, I gave you a ring in a church because our families arranged a match,” Matteo said softly, taking her delicate left hand in his. “I gave you a vow when I didn't truly understand how extraordinary you were.”

He slipped the heavy platinum ring onto her finger, resting his lips against her knuckles.

“Tonight, Elena, I give you a new vow,” Matteo promised, looking directly into her dark, beautiful eyes. “I vow to protect your joy as fiercely as you protected my life. I vow to spend every second of my remaining years making sure you never feel alone, afraid, or burden-bound again.”

Tears shone like diamonds in Elena’s eyes as she looked at the ring, then back at her husband.

“I love you, Matteo,” she whispered, leaning in until her breath touched his lips. “I loved you when I took that bullet, I loved you through every silent night in the dark, and I will love you until my last breath.”

“I love you, my Queen,” Matteo murmured.

He pulled her into his arms, kissing her deeply under the canopy of Italian stars, while the gentle waters of Lake Como sang a soft lullaby to the end of their sorrow and the sweet, eternal beginning of their life together.
