Chapter 9 - The Fall of Marco

The sound of approaching police sirens roared across the coastal highway above the harbor, their flashing red and blue lights cutting through the rain and reflecting across the dark surface of the ocean.
Marco sprang up from the sofa, his hand reaching for a pistol tucked into his waistband, but Gio was faster. With a swift, practiced movement, Gio raised his weapon and fired a single shot into the table in front of Marco, shattering the glass top into a thousand sparkling pieces.
"Don't," Gio said softly. "Ending you here is too easy, Uncle. You spent ten years hiding behind my father's shadow, stealing from the family, and pretending to be a leader. Now, you will spend the rest of your life in a maximum-security cell in Palermo."
Outside, heavy footsteps echoed on the deck as Italian state police officers clad in tactical gear boarded the yacht, weapons raised.
"Giovanni Rossi! Marco Rossi! Do not move!" the lead commander shouted, bursting into the salon.
Gio slowly lowered his pistol, placing it on a marble counter, and raised his hands calmly. He looked over at the commander, a man he had known for years through high-level diplomatic circles.
"Commander," Gio said smoothly. "Marco Rossi is all yours. You will find complete documentation of his illegal operations on the server hard drive sitting on that desk."
Marco was slammed against the wall by two officers, iron cuffs snapping tightly around his wrists. As he was dragged past Isadora, he glared at her with pure hatred. "You ruined everything, you wretched girl!"
Isadora met his gaze without a hint of fear. "My father sends his regards."
As the police cleared the yacht, taking Marco and his remaining associates into custody, the chaotic energy of the night began to settle into a cold, quiet reality.
Gio walked over to Isadora, taking off his wet suit jacket and gently draping it over her shivering shoulders.
"It's over," he said quietly.

"Is it?" Isadora asked, looking up into his dark, tired eyes. "The syndicate is fractured. Marco’s men will fall apart without him, but the Amalfi Coast will be looking for a new leader."
"They don't need a dictator," Gio said, looking out at the glittering lights of the coastal town through the window. "They need stability. And for the first time in my life, I can build something that isn't founded on lies."
