Chapter 8 - Fire on the Marble Floor

The grand hallway of the Moretti estate was a zone of chaotic violence.
Elias had anticipated Marco’s betrayal, but not the sudden breach of his private lower levels. He stood near the grand fireplace, firing his heavy pistol with lethal accuracy, driving Marco’s mercenaries back toward the front entrance.
"Don Elias!" Stefan yelled, dragging himself out of the service staircase, his shoulder bleeding heavily.
Elias turned his head, his heart stopping as he saw Seraphina running through the smoke with Leo clutching her neck.
"Elias!" she shouted.
Marco Vance, standing behind two shielded mercenaries near the main doorway, saw her. His eyes widened into circles of shock and rage as he recognized the face of the girl he had tried to burn twenty years ago.
"The girl!" Marco shrieked at his men. "Kill the Laurent girl! Burn her!"
A mercenary raised an automatic rifle, aiming straight for Seraphina’s back as she covered Leo with her own body.
Elias didn't hesitate.
He broke cover, stepping directly into the line of fire, firing three rapid shots into the mercenary's chest before the man could pull his trigger.
A sharp round grazed Elias’s side, tearing through his jacket, but he didn't even flinch. He reached Seraphina in two long strides, throwing his large frame over both her and his son, shielding them from the spray of glass and bullets.
"Are you hit?!" Elias growled, his hand checking her back, his gray eyes burning with wild, frantic concern.
"No! No, I'm okay!" Seraphina gasped, clutching his bloody jacket. "Your side—"
"It's a scratch," Elias spat.
He turned toward the grand entrance, his dark face contorted in absolute fury.
Moretti loyalists burst through the side doors, outnumbering Marco’s remaining men within seconds. The gunfire ceased as Marco Vance was dragged to his knees on the ruined marble floor, his silver cane shattered, his weapons taken.

Elias stood up slowly, picking up a heavy tactical rifle from a fallen guard.
He walked over to Marco Vance, the barrel of the weapon held low, his heavy boots crushing shattered crystal underfoot.
