Chapter 10 - The Sovereign Union

The Grand Ballroom of the Duca-Valente Citadel was ablaze with ten thousand candles.

It was not a wedding of convenience, nor a tense political negotiation masked as a celebration. It was the official coronation of the joint rule of Oakhaven.

Every noble, every merchant, and every remaining capo of the four districts stood packed along the sides of the hall, bowing their heads as Roman and Clara walked together down the central marble aisle.

Clara wore a gown of spun silver and black lace, her shoulders exposed proudly, revealing both the jagged scar on her neck and the double-winged mark on her shoulder. Around her neck hung the restored Valente pendant—the iron and silver crest now whole, glowing brightly against her skin.

Beside her, Roman walked in full ceremonial uniform, his dark coat adorned with the crest of the united houses. His hand held hers, their fingers intertwined, their gold rings glinting beneath the chandeliers.

At the head of the hall stood Eleanor, sitting in a velvet armchair, tears of joy streaming down her face as she watched the girl she had raised in the ashes take her rightful seat upon the throne of the harbor.

As they reached the dais, Roman turned Clara to face the crowd.

The room fell into a profound, reverent silence.

"People of Oakhaven!" Roman’s voice echoed across the vaulted ceiling, powerful and clear. "The night of shadows is over! The House of Valente and the House of Duca stand as one! Let it be known across every port, every sea, and every land—whoever touches my wife, touches the iron of this city!"

The crowd erupted into thunderous applause, shouts of acclamation echoing off the stone walls that had once seen so much bloodshed.

Clara turned to Roman, a brilliant, breathtaking smile illuminating her face—a smile that made every person in the room realize that the 'ugliest girl in town' was, in truth, the most radiant queen Oakhaven had ever known.

"Satisfied, my Lord?" Clara asked under her breath, her gray eyes dancing with mischief and love.

Roman leaned down, his lips touching her ear as he whispered:

May you like

"I am only satisfied... because you are mine, my Queen."

They turned back to their city together, hand in hand, ready to rule the storm.
