Chapter 7 - The Vault beneath the Waves

The victory at the Council hall was swift, but the war for Oakhaven was far from over.
While Victor Vane was placed under house arrest by the neutral councilmen, Julian fled into the night, taking with him three hundred heavily armed mercenaries and retreating to the old harbor citadel—the very ruins where the Valente family had been betrayed twenty years prior.
Inside the safe house, Roman and Clara stood over a sea chart of the harbor cliffs.
"Julian has fortified the upper courtyard of the ruins," Marcus reported, laying down tactical photographs. "He knows that if he can hold the Citadel for forty-eight hours, his foreign backers will send a fleet to extract him—and bombard the city."
"He is looking for the vault," Clara said, her finger tracing the ancient map of the Citadel.
Roman looked at her. "The Valente vault?"
"My mother... Eleanor... gave me this before we left the house tonight," Clara said, pulling a small silver key from her pocket. "It belonged to my father. She said the vault doesn't contain gold or jewels. It contains the original deeds of land and the secret ledger of every illegal deal made by the Council for fifty years."
"If Julian gets that ledger, he can blackmail half the city into supporting him," Roman said, his face hardening. "We go tonight."
"I am coming with you," Clara said firmly.
"No," Roman said immediately. "It is a kill zone. Julian is desperate."
"He is in my home, Roman," Clara said, stepping into his space, her eyes flashing with a fierce, dangerous light he had never seen before. "He is standing on the ashes of my parents. You married me to secure your seat. If you want to keep it, you walk beside me into that fortress."
Roman stared at her for a long, silent moment. A slow, dark smile touched the corner of his lips—the first genuine smile she had ever seen on his face.
"You are far more dangerous than I accounted for, my bride," Roman murmured.
"You should have read the contract more carefully," she replied.
Two hours later, under the cover of a pitch-black storm, three speedboats cut through the heavy waves toward the base of the Citadel cliffs. The rain poured in violent sheets, masking the sound of their engines.
Roman, Clara, and ten elite operators climbed the narrow, ancient stone stairs cut directly into the cliff side—the secret passage Eleanor had used to escape twenty years ago. The steps were slippery with moss and spray, but Clara moved with a quiet, fierce agility, driven by memories she was only now beginning to understand.
They reached the iron gate leading into the subterranean tunnels beneath the Citadel. Clara inserted the small silver key into the rusted lock. With a heavy, grinding groan, the mechanism turned, and the iron doors swung open into the dark abyss.
The air inside smelled of old sea salt, damp stone, and ancient ashes.
They moved through the catacombs in silence, guided by flashlights. As they reached the central chamber beneath the main hall, they heard voices echoing down from above—shouting, heavy boots, and the sound of iron sledges striking stone.
"They are trying to break through the vault floor from above," Marcus whispered, checking his weapon.
"They won't break it," Clara whispered back. "The vault is sealed from the inside of the sea chamber. Follow me."
She led them through a narrow passage that opened into a vast, cavernous room built directly over the crashing waves below. In the center of the room stood a massive door of solid bronze, carved with the seal of the double wings and the crown.
Standing in front of the bronze door was Julian Vane, holding a lantern and surrounded by six mercenaries equipped with explosive charges.
"Hurry up with those detonators!" Julian yelled, his voice echoing frantically. "If Roman’s men get here before we blow this door, I'll skin you all alive!"
May you like
"You are too late, Julian," Roman’s voice cut through the dark like a blade.
Julian spun around, raising his pistol, but Roman was already moving.
