Chapter 8 - The Sanctuary

The private guest wing of the Kovar estate was larger than Ara’s entire former penthouse.

It featured high vaulted ceilings, a wood-burning fireplace that crackled with warm, golden light, plush velvet armchairs, and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking a dark, tranquil river stretching toward the horizon.

For three days, Ara lived in a state of quiet, luxurious restoration.

She slept for ten hours every night without waking up once to check the hallway. She ate warm, home-cooked meals prepared by the housekeeper, Mrs. Gable. She walked through the private garden paths behind the estate, surrounded by tall stone walls and discreetly positioned security guards who offered respectful bows whenever she passed.

There were no security cameras inside her rooms. There were no monitored phones. There were no subtle, patronizing comments about her emotional stability.

On the third afternoon, Tessa arrived at the estate.

When Ara walked into the grand library to meet her, Tessa let out a loud sob, sprinting across the polished hardwood floor to throw her arms around Ara in a fierce, breathless hug.

"Oh my God, Ara!" Tessa cried, holding her at arm's length, scanning her face with tear-filled eyes. "I was so terrified when your phone went offline on Tuesday night! I went to your apartment and saw police cars and federal agents everywhere!"

Ara smiled—a real, bright smile that lit up her entire face. "I'm okay, Tessa. I'm completely safe."

"Who is this guy?" Tessa whispered, looking around the magnificent library lined with thousands of rare books. "The legal news is exploding today, Ara! Graham’s private equity firm was shut down by federal regulators yesterday morning! His board removed him, his assets were frozen, and he’s facing multiple indictments for financial fraud and illegal surveillance!"

"His name is Adrien Kovar," Ara said softly, sitting down on a comfortable leather sofa near the window.

Tessa’s eyes widened in shock. "Adrien Kovar? The shipping tycoon? The man the city council is terrified of?"

"He’s the man who unlocked my door, Tessa," Ara corrected gently.

At that moment, the library doors opened.

Adrien stepped into the room, dressed in a sharp dark charcoal suit, carrying a legal folder. When he saw Tessa, he paused, offering a polite, dignified bow.

"Mrs. Voss... excuse me, Ms. Vance," Adrien corrected himself smoothly, addressing Ara by her maiden name. "I hope I am not interrupting your visit."

"Not at all, Mr. Kovar," Tessa said, standing up, her posture instantly becoming polite and respectful in his imposing presence.

Adrien walked over to the table, setting the legal folder down beside Ara.

"My legal team has finalized your divorce petition, Ara," Adrien said softly. "Because Graham’s assets have been frozen under federal jurisdiction, my firm has backed a special petition ensuring your half of the marital equity—along with your personal consolidated trust—is fully liquidated and transferred into an independent bank account registered under your maiden name."

Ara looked at the documents inside the folder. Everything was clean, legally ironclad, and executed with absolute precision.

"He signed it?" Ara asked, looking up at him.

"He signed it an hour ago in his lawyer's office," Adrien replied, his obsidian eyes holding her gaze with quiet satisfaction. "Graham Voss no longer holds any legal, financial, or personal claim over your life. You are officially, completely free."

Ara sat frozen for three seconds, letting the absolute reality of those words settle into her soul.

Free.

Not a temporary escape. Not a dangerous hideout. An absolute, legally binding, permanent freedom.

"Thank you, Adrien," she whispered, her voice thick with emotion.

"You owe me nothing, Ara," Adrien replied gently. He turned to Tessa. "Mrs. Gable has prepared tea in the conservatory for you both. Please, take all the time you need."

He bowed politely and turned to leave the room.

"Adrien," Ara called out, standing up from the sofa.

He paused at the doorway, looking back over his shoulder.

"Will you be joining us for dinner tonight?" Ara asked, a soft, hopeful light shining in her eyes.

May you like

A rare, warm smile touched Adrien’s features—a smile that transformed his intimidating, dangerous face into something breathtakingly handsome.

"It would be my honor, Ara," he said softly, before stepping out into the hallway and pulling the heavy oak door quietly shut behind him.
