Chapter 9 - The Question

That evening, a soft, misty rain fell over the river, creating a gentle, rhythmic sound against the tall glass windows of the estate's private dining room.

Tessa had departed at 6:00 PM, leaving Ara and Adrien alone in the warm, candlelit room.

They sat opposite each other at a small round mahogany table set near the fireplace. The meal was simple, elegant, and accompanied by a bottle of fine French red wine.

For an hour, they spoke naturally—not about courts, legal battles, or financial fraud, but about history, art, and the quiet beauty of the river in late autumn. Ara discovered that beneath Adrien’s formidable, dangerous exterior lay a deeply cultured, brilliant mind—a man who appreciated silence, respected boundaries, and spoke with absolute honesty.

For the first time in six years, Ara ate a meal without worrying about how fast she was chewing, how loud her fork clicked against the porcelain, or whether her opinions would be subtly dismantled.

At 9:00 PM, Mrs. Gable cleared the table, leaving a pot of hot herbal tea beside them before discreetly exiting the room.

Ara sat back in her comfortable upholstered chair, holding her warm tea cup in both hands, watching the flames crackle inside the stone fireplace.

"You're quiet tonight," Adrien’s deep voice broke the comfortable silence.

Ara turned her head, looking at him across the candlelit table. He had removed his suit jacket, rolling his white shirt sleeves up to his forearms, looking relaxed, grounded, and immensely powerful.

"I was just thinking," Ara murmured softly. "About how strange it feels to sit in a room and not feel like I'm waiting for an explosion."

Adrien set his wineglass down onto the tablecloth. He leaned forward slightly, resting his forearms on the table, his obsidian eyes locking onto hers with a quiet, intense gravity that held no threat, only pure, focused attention.

The room fell into an absolute, sacred quiet.

Adrien looked at her for a long, silent minute. He looked at her smooth forehead, her clear, bright eyes, and the steady, relaxed posture of her shoulders.

Then, he asked the single question he had held back for eight long months—the question he had kept buried since the moment she collided with him in the ballroom.

His voice was barely above a whisper, carrying a raw, profound weight that vibrated deep inside her chest:

"Who made you afraid, Ara?"
