Chapter 10 - The Chicago Horizon

Three months later.
The autumn sun was shining brightly over Chicago’s Magnificent Mile, casting long, golden light across the waters of Lake Michigan.
On the seventy-fifth floor of a brand-new, glass-and-steel skyscraper overlooking the lake, the brass doors of a private executive elevator slid open with a soft, melodic chime.
Claire Bennett stepped out onto the polished marble floor of the grand reception suite.
She wore an exquisite white tailored suit, her dark hair falling in soft, luxurious waves around her shoulders, looking every bit the high-powered corporate executive she was born to be.
The new headquarters of Cole Enterprises Chicago branch was quiet, pristine, and entirely legal.
There were no shadow ledgers, no hidden gun safes behind paintings, no secret blood-stained harbor docks, and no conversations that stopped when outsiders walked into the room.
Claire walked across the wide space, taking a sip from her warm latte, and stepped into the massive corner office overlooking the lake.
Behind a massive, custom-built desk made of reclaimed white oak sat Damian Cole.
He looked magnificent. His broad shoulders were clad in a crisp grey three-piece suit, his dark hair neatly trimmed, his scarred face looking younger, rested, and healthier than she had ever seen it in five long years. His grey eyes were clear, sharp, and focused on a set of architectural blueprints spread across his desk.
As Claire walked into the room, Damian set his pen down, leaning back in his leather chair, a slow, warm smile spreading across his lips as he watched her approach.
“Good morning, Vice President Bennett,” Damian said, his deep baritone voice filled with genuine warmth.
“Good morning, Mr. Cole,” Claire replied, setting her coffee down on his desk and leaning over to look at the blueprints. “Are those the final floor plans for the new community health center on 5th Street?”
“They are,” Damian said, reaching out to capture her hand, pulling her gently around the desk until she was standing between his knees. “The city council approved the land grant yesterday afternoon. Construction begins next month.”
Claire looked down at his handsome face, her thumb gently tracing the faint, fading scar along his jawline.
“No mob bosses?” she asked, a playful twinkle in her dark eyes. “No corrupt dock captains? No thermite torches?”
Damian chuckled, wrapping his arms around her waist, pulling her down into his lap.
“Just honest construction workers, overpriced architects, and a terrifying Vice President who keeps my legal books entirely too clean,” Damian whispered, leaning up to press a soft, lingering kiss against her lips.
Claire melted into the embrace, her fingers winding into his hair, feeling the steady, strong beat of his heart against her chest—a heart that was no longer fighting for survival in the violent dark, but living freely in the bright light of a new beginning.
When they finally broke apart, Damian looked into her dark eyes, his grey gaze burning with an intense, profound devotion that needed no hidden cameras or forced pretense to prove its truth.
“Thank you, Claire,” he whispered softly against her forehead. “For saving my life.”
Claire smiled, leaning back to look at him, her heart filled with an overwhelming, absolute peace.

“You’re very welcome, Damian,” she murmured, leaning back in for another kiss. “Now try not to embarrass me in the board meeting at ten.”
Damian let out a deep, booming laugh that echoed through the grand, sunlit office, sweeping her up into his arms as the bright future of Chicago unfolded endlessly outside their window.
