Chapter 9 - The Reckoning at the Harbor

Four hours later, the afternoon rain had cleared, leaving Grayport harbor bathed in a cold, brilliant northern sunlight.

At the end of Pier 12, a magnificent ninety-foot luxury yacht named The Sea Sovereign sat idling in the deep water, its powerful diesel engines sending white foam swirling through the gray bay.

On the upper deck of the vessel, Graham Sloane stood near the chrome railing, dressed in a long camel-hair coat, frantically barking orders into his cell phone while his remaining personal bodyguards loaded silver aluminum travel cases filled with bearer bonds and untraceable cash into the master cabin.

“I don't care about the real estate holdings!” Sloane screamed into his phone, his face red with panic. “Liquidate the Swiss accounts right now! Get the transfer cleared before the federal prosecutor signs the seizure order!”

He slammed his phone shut, running a hand through his slicked-back silver hair, his cold blue eyes darting nervously toward the harbor road.

Vance hadn't checked in for four hours. His men at the corporate tower had gone completely silent. Sloane knew with terrifying certainty that the siege had failed. Damian Cole was still alive, and when Damian Cole came for a debt, he collected it in full.

“Cast off the lines!” Sloane yelled at his captain on the bridge. “Get us into international waters right now!”

The heavy braided mooring lines splashed into the harbor water. The yacht’s engines roared, the heavy vessel slowly beginning to pull away from the wooden dock.

Sloane let out a long, desperate breath of relief, leaning against the rail, watching Grayport’s skyline shrink away into the distance.

“Safe travels, Graham.”

The deep, calm voice echoed from the shadow of the lower deck lounge doors.

Sloane’s body went completely rigid. He spun around, his hand reaching frantically into his coat for his gold-plated pistol.

Stepping out from the lower cabin into the bright sunlight was Damian Cole.

He looked terrifying. He wore a crisp, brand-new black suit, his tie perfectly knotted, his scarred face completely calm, though his skin was still noticeably pale from blood loss. In his right hand, he held a sleek, silent electronic detonator.

Standing right beside him was Claire Bennett.

She wore an elegant beige trench coat over a fresh black dress, her hair pulled back into a sleek, professional ponytail, holding a thick leather folder under her arm. Her dark eyes were cold, confident, and completely devoid of fear.

Behind them stood Declan and six heavily armed tactical guards who had already quietly disarmed the yacht’s crew while the vessel was preparing to depart.

“How... how did you get on my boat?” Sloane stammered, his hand freezing on his holster as six red laser dots from Declan’s rifles locked onto his chest.

“I bought the harbor piloting company that guided your yacht into this slip three months ago, Graham,” Claire said smoothly, taking a step forward and opening her leather folder. “Guess who owns the security clearance for this berth?”

Sloane’s jaw dropped in absolute shock.

“You...” Sloane choked out, staring at the secretary in horror.

“Furthermore,” Claire continued, pulling out an official blue-embossed legal document, “as of twenty minutes ago, the Federal District Court of Eastern Grayport has issued a global asset seizure order against all vessels, real estate, and financial holdings registered to you or your shell corporations.”

She held up the paper, offering him a radiant, professional smile.

“This yacht no longer belongs to you, Mr. Sloane. It belongs to the Children’s Medical Foundation of Grayport. Damian donated it this morning.”

Sloane’s face went completely purple with rage. He pulled his gold pistol from his coat, screaming madly, “I’ll kill you both!”

BANG!

Damian didn't even draw his weapon.

Declan stepped forward, firing a single round from his suppressed rifle that struck Sloane’s hand, shattering the gold pistol into pieces and sending it clattering across the teak deck.

Sloane collapsed onto his knees, howling in agony as he clutched his bleeding fingers.

Damian walked over slowly, his polished leather shoes clicking against the deck wood until he stood right over the fallen crime boss. He leaned down, grabbing Sloane by his hair, forcing him to look up into his cold, grey eyes.

“My father was a monster, Graham,” Damian said quietly, his voice carrying the terrifying weight of absolute authority. “He let men like you turn this city into a bloody playground for forty years. But I am not my father.”

Damian leaned closer, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper.

“If you ever return to Grayport, if you ever utter Claire Bennett’s name again, I won't send you to federal prison. I will feed you to the crabs at the bottom of this harbor. Do you understand me?”

Sloane, weeping in pain and terror, nodded frantically. “I... I understand! I swear to God, Damian! I’ll leave! I’ll never come back!”

Damian released his hair, letting Sloane’s head drop to the deck, and turned his back on his ruined rival.

Two police harbor patrol boats, their red and blue lights flashing brightly against the sparkling water, pulled up alongside the yacht to take Sloane and his remaining men into federal custody.

Damian walked back to Claire, offering her his arm.

Claire smiled softly, sliding her fingers around his arm, leaning her head gently against his broad shoulder as the yacht docked safely back at the pier.

“That was very theatrical, Mr. Cole,” she murmured.

“I learned from the best, Miss Bennett,” he replied smoothly.
