Chapter 8 - The Fall of Philadelphia

The sun was just rising over the Philadelphia skyline when four black SUVs pulled up outside the private gates of Julian Valenti’s sprawling estate in the suburbs of Chestnut Hill.
The guards at the main gate didn't even have time to reach for their sidearms.
Samuel Vance’s men breached the gates using heavy armored rams, sweeping through the courtyard with terrifying, military precision. Within four minutes, Valenti’s perimeter security was completely dismantled, their weapons confiscated, and their communications cut.
Inside the grand double-height foyer of the Valenti mansion, Julian stood at the top of the marble staircase in his silk bathrobe, his face white with sudden, unadulterated shock.
Heavy iron boots echoed across his marble floor as Roman Blackmere walked through the shattered front doors, flanked by Vance and twelve heavily armed men in black tactical gear.
Roman did not look like a man who had been awake all night. His hair was meticulously styled, his dark charcoal suit immaculate, his expression as calm and distant as if he were attending a routine board meeting.
"Blackmere!" Julian shouted, his voice cracking with panic as he looked down at the tactical team filling his hall. "What the hell is the meaning of this? You’ve invaded my private residence!"
Roman stopped at the foot of the stairs, taking off his leather gloves and folding them neatly into his jacket pocket.
"You sent four men into my home last night, Julian," Roman said, his voice carrying clearly through the high-ceilinged room. "They broke my perimeter, killed one of my locks, and terrified my staff."
Julian swallowed hard, his hands trembling as he gripped the marble balustrade. "It was a mistake! I was looking for Arthur Moreau’s girl! She belongs to me, Blackmere! Her father stole forty million dollars from my syndicate!"
Roman slowly ascended the first three steps of the staircase.
"Nothing in my house belongs to you," Roman said, each word spoken with cold, absolute precision. "And Nora Vance-Moreau has no money. Her father lost it all in Panama before he died."
"She’s lying to you!" Julian yelled, backing away up the stairs. "She knows where the hard drive is!"
"She is not lying," Roman said, reaching the top landing. He stopped three feet from Julian, his towering frame casting a long, dark shadow over the Philadelphia boss. "I looked into her eyes, Julian. I know what a person looks like when they have been hunted for things they do not possess. You tortured her father, you hunted a twenty-six-year-old girl across three states, and last night you brought violence to my doorstep."
Julian reached frantically toward his bathrobe pocket, where a small Derringer pistol was stashed.
Before his fingers could even reach the fabric, Roman’s hand snapped forward like a striking viper. He grabbed Julian by the throat, slamming him violently back against the oak-paneled wall.
Julian gasped for air, his feet dangling six inches off the floor, his face turning a deep, dangerous purple as Roman’s fingers tightened around his windpipe.
"Listen to me very carefully, Julian," Roman whispered, his face inches from Valenti’s terror-stricken eyes. "If I ever hear your name mentioned in the same sentence as Nora Vance-Moreau again... if one of your men takes a single step across the New York border... I will not send my security team. I will come here myself, and I will erase the Valenti name from every ledger on the East Coast."
Roman let go.
Julian collapsed onto the floor in a heap, coughing violently and clutching his bruised throat.
Roman pulled a clean white handkerchief from his pocket, casually wiping his fingers as he looked down at the broken man.

"Your territory in South Philadelphia is forfeit as compensation for my hallway floor," Roman added smoothly. "Samuel will handle the transfer paperwork this afternoon. If you are still in this city by midnight, you will not survive the night."
Without waiting for a response, Roman turned on his heel and walked down the grand marble staircase, leaving Julian Valenti gasping in the ruins of his empire.
