Chapter 9 - A New Sanctuary

By six o'clock that evening, Roman Blackmere’s sedan returned to the iron gates of Blackmere House.

Nora was standing near the floor-to-ceiling windows of the main drawing room, watching the long black car roll down the gravel driveway. She had spent the entire day in a state of high anxiety, her mind spinning with visions of gun battles, arrests, and retaliation.

The heavy front doors opened, and Roman stepped into the foyer.

He was alone, having left Vance downstairs to coordinate the new security protocols. He looked tired, the sharp lines of his face softened by the warm light of the entry hall chandelier.

Nora stepped out into the hallway, her hands clutched tightly in front of her simple maid’s apron.

Roman stopped when he saw her. He looked at her small, clean frame, taking in the faint color that had returned to her cheeks after a full day of rest.

"It is done, Nora," Roman said quietly, walking toward her. "Julian Valenti will never bother you again. His syndicate has been dismantled, and he is currently fleeing to Europe."

Nora stared at him, her lips parting in quiet disbelief. "He... he just agreed to leave?"

"He didn't have a choice," Roman said simply. "The threat has been removed. You are completely safe. You can stay here as long as you like, or if you prefer, Samuel can arrange a clean identity, a house, and a generous financial foundation for you anywhere in the country."

Nora stood frozen in the middle of the grand corridor.

Freedom. Real, absolute freedom. The target that had been painted on her back for two years was gone. She could go to California. She could go to Europe. She could live a normal life where she didn't have to look over her shoulder every time a black car drove past.

Yet, as she looked at Roman Blackmere—the man who had crossed state lines, destroyed a syndicate, and stood between her and death without ever asking for a single thing in return—she realized something profound.

She didn't want to run anymore.

"I don't want to leave," Nora whispered.

Roman paused, his hazel eyes locking onto hers with sudden, unexpected intensity. "Nora, you don't have to clean floors here anymore. You are not a maid. You were a prisoner of circumstance."

"I know," Nora said, taking two slow steps toward him, her head held high, no longer hiding behind her hands or her apron. "When I came to this house, I was hiding behind your shadow because I was terrified of the dark. But today... today I realize I don't want the shadow, Mr. Blackmere. I want the sanctuary."

May you like

Roman looked down at her, a rare, breathtakingly warm smile slowly breaking across his hard, handsome features.

"Then you shall have it," Roman said softly. "But not as a maid, Nora. Never again as a maid."
