Chapter 6 - Shadows on the Main Line

Two weeks passed.

The city of South Philadelphia was buzzing with quiet, terrified rumors. Overnight, fifteen high-ranking members of Leo Carbone's crew had completely vanished. Their gambling dens were boarded up, their sports-betting wire services were shut down, and the extortionate street debts held over dozens of local business owners were abruptly canceled. Nobody dared to ask questions. In the underworld of Pennsylvania, everyone understood that when fifteen men disappear in a single night, the order came from the top of the mountain.

At the Russo estate, a quiet routine had returned, though everything had subtly shifted.

Claire was no longer allowed to clean.

Despite her protests, Dominic had hired two replacement housekeepers to handle the daily chores of the mansion. Claire was officially moved into the primary guest suite permanently while her arm healed.

Every afternoon, Dominic sat with her in the grand glass conservatory overlooking the autumn gardens. He would work on his laptop, signing legitimate corporate documents for his shipping and logistics firms, while Claire read books or managed the digital administrative files for her mother's care at St. Jude.

"You don't have to stay here every afternoon, Mr. Russo," Claire said one sunny Thursday, turning a page of her book with her left hand. "I know you have an empire to run."

Dominic looked up from his computer screen, a faint, rare smile touching the corners of his mouth. "My managers handle the daily operations, Claire. I prefer working where it is quiet."

He paused, setting his fountain pen down on the glass table.

"How is your arm today?"

"Dr. Evans said the bone is fusing nicely," she replied, holding up the heavy plaster cast. "The itching is the worst part now."

"Three more weeks," Dominic said smoothly.

Claire looked at him, her brown eyes filled with genuine curiosity. Over the past fortnight, she had seen two very different sides of Dominic Russo. To the outside world, he was a ruthless, terrifying mafia boss who could wipe out fifteen men without batting an eye. But to her, he was soft-spoken, incredibly observant, and fiercely protective.

"Why didn't you just fire me three years ago?" Claire asked suddenly.

Dominic raised an eyebrow. "Why would I fire the best housekeeper this estate has ever had?"

"Because I noticed things," Claire said quietly, setting her book down. "I noticed the hidden safes behind the oil paintings in the library. I noticed the encrypted phones sitting on the counter. I noticed the men with shoulder holsters who came in through the side doors at midnight. A normal employee would have asked questions or quit out of fear."

Dominic leaned back in his leather chair, studying her face with intense fascination. "And why didn't you quit, Claire?"

"Because you were respectful," she answered honestly. "You never looked down on me. You never treated me like hired help. You left generous holiday bonuses, you made sure I was home early on my mother's bad days, and you kept this house safe."

Dominic’s expression softened, a deep, silent warmth flickering in his dark eyes.

"Safety is a rare commodity in my world, Claire," he said softly, his voice dropping into an intimate register. "Most people around me are here because they want power, money, or favor. You came here simply to do an honest day's work to protect the person you loved."

He reached across the small glass table, his large, warm hand gently covering her left fingers.

"That kind of loyalty is priceless," Dominic murmured. "I recognized it the first week you worked here. And I will never let anyone destroy it."

Claire felt a sudden, electrical shiver run down her spine—not from fear, but from a deep, blossoming emotion she had never permitted herself to feel before.

Before either of them could speak further, Marco knocked sharply on the conservatory door and stepped inside, his expression grim.

"Boss," Marco said, glancing briefly at Claire before looking back at Dominic. "We have a situation downtown. The District Attorney’s office just launched a grand jury investigation into the disappearance of Carbone and his men. And someone inside the police department just leaked a rumor that a civilian housekeeper was seen at the hospital with a broken arm the morning before they vanished."
