Chapter 5 - The Thread of Secrets

Two weeks passed, turning Ashcroft Manor into an oiled, efficient machine.
Under my management, the atmosphere among the staff had completely transformed. The house echoed with quiet energy, warm smiles, and genuine pride. The new tailored uniforms had arrived—beautiful, dark-navy suits for the footmen, soft gray linen dresses for the maids, made of high-quality fabrics that allowed them to move comfortably.
My relationship with Lucian had grown into something intense, deep, and utterly undeniable.
We spent every evening together in the private second-floor study, working through the estate’s master accounts by the light of the crackling fireplace. We shared late-night meals, long conversations about our pasts, and quiet moments where the unspoken tension between us burned hotter than the fire in the hearth.
Yet, a dark mystery lingered in the back of my mind.
The coat tag. BERNICE VANCE - SIZE XL.
Julian Vance’s reaction to my name, his family's connection to the old housekeeper, and the fact that Victor Hale had hidden that specific coat in the back of the staff inventory for twelve years didn't feel like a coincidence.
Late one rainy Thursday evening, while Lucian was away in the city attending an emergency syndicate meeting, I decided to investigate the estate’s historical archives deep in the manor's sub-basement.
Accompanied by Gideon, who carried a heavy flashlight and a ring of rusty iron keys, I descended the long stone spiral staircase beneath the wine cellar.
The sub-basement was dark, cold, and smelled of ancient paper and damp granite. Rows of iron shelving held hundreds of dusty wooden boxes containing records dating back to the founding of the Ashcroft empire fifty years ago.
"What are we looking for, Miss Quinn?" Gideon asked, his flashlight beam cutting through the thick gloom.
"Bernice Vance's employment file," I said, wrapping my wool shawl tighter around my shoulders. "Victor kept physical records of every servant who worked here since 2000. If Bernice Vance left twelve years ago, there should be an exit interview or a pension record."
We searched through the dust-covered boxes for nearly an hour.
Finally, near the very back of a locked steel cabinet labeled 1998-2012 UNRESOLVED STAFF MATTERS, I found a thick, yellowed folder with Bernice Vance's name written across the tab.
I opened it on a flat wooden crate.
Inside was Bernice’s original application form, her medical records, and a series of hand-written letters. But as I flipped toward the back of the file, a folded, dark blue velvet pouch fell out onto the floor.
I picked it up. Inside the pouch was a heavy silver signet ring engraved with a crest: a striking hawk holding a broken arrow.
It was the old house crest of the Vance Family.
"Why would a simple housekeeper have a Vance family signet ring?" I whispered, holding the heavy ring up to the flashlight beam.
I turned back to the paper records in the folder. Attached to the final page was a handwritten letter dated October 14th, 2012—the very night Bernice Vance had suddenly vanished from the Ashcroft Estate.
The handwriting was shaky, rushed, and stained with dried water marks.
To whoever finds this record, the letter read.
My name is Bernice Vance. I am not a servant. I am the legal sister of Thomas Vance, the former head of Vance Logistics. Twelve years ago, my brother discovered that the previous Ashcroft Don—Lucian's late father, Marcus Ashcroft—had signed a secret territorial covenant granting forty percent of the harbor revenue to our family in perpetuity.
To prevent this covenant from being revealed, Victor Hale was ordered to silence my family. They took my identity, forced me into servitude under a fake name, and threatened to kill my young daughter if I ever spoke the truth. The original signed covenant is hidden inside the lining of my old winter coat...
My breath seized violently in my throat.
My hands began to shake so hard I nearly dropped the letter.
The original covenant is hidden inside the lining of my old winter coat.
The oversized gray coat.
The coat I had worn for eleven months.
The coat that Lucian had ordered burned in the incinerator two weeks ago.
"My God..." I gasped, looking up at Gideon with wide, terrified eyes. "Victor didn't give me that coat because he didn't have my size. He gave me that coat because he was hiding the territorial covenant inside it!"
Gideon’s face turned deathly pale. "If that covenant exists... it proves the Ashcroft family has been illegally withholding hundreds of millions of dollars from the Vance family for over a decade. It could start an all-out mob war that would tear this city apart."
Before Gideon could say another word, the iron door at the top of the sub-basement stairs slammed shut with a deafening CLANG!
The heavy mechanical lock clicked into place from the outside.
The flashlight beam flickered violently, then died, plunging us into absolute, suffocating darkness.
From the other side of the thick iron door, a soft, mocking voice echoed down the stone shaft.

"You really are too smart for your own good, Miss Quinn," the voice said.
It was Victor Hale.
