Chapter 9 - The Phoenix

We stood at the edge of the estate’s cliff overlooking the roaring dark waters of the Hudson River below.

The rain had finally stopped, replaced by a soft, cold wind that carried the fresh scent of autumn earth. The sky in the east was beginning to turn a pale, dusty purple as the first rays of dawn broke over the horizon.

Gideon poured a light layer of gasoline over the oversized gray coat resting on the flat rock.

Lucian pulled a silver lighter from his pocket, flicking the wheel. A small, bright orange flame danced in the cool morning air.

He looked at me. "Would you like to do the honors, Miss Comptroller?"

I took the lighter from his hand.

I looked down at the gray coat one last time. I remembered the freezing winter mornings. I remembered Victor’s cruel sneer. I remembered the shame I had felt in the ballroom when the guests laughed at my shape.

I realized then that the coat had never been my shame. It had been my armor. It had hidden me until I was strong enough to stand before the world and take what was mine.

"Goodbye," I whispered.

I dropped the flame onto the fabric.

WHOOSH!

Bright, roaring orange flames instantly consumed the old wool. The black smoke curled up into the purple dawn sky, carrying away eleven months of pain, fear, and servitude. The yellowed tag burned into white ash, vanishing forever into the river wind.

I stood beside Lucian, watching the fire burn down to nothing.

Lucian reached out, his long fingers intertwining with mine. His hand was warm, strong, and steady.

"What happens now, Lucian?" I asked softly, looking out at the rising sun over the city skyline.

"Now, we rebuild," Lucian said, turning to face me.

He reached into his inner suit pocket and pulled out a small, velvet-lined jeweler’s box. He opened it under the morning light.

Inside rested a stunning ring—a massive, emerald-cut yellow diamond set in a band of polished white gold, shimmering like liquid sunlight.

My breath caught in my throat. "Lucian..."

"This isn't a mafia alliance ring, Alora," Lucian said, his voice softer than I had ever heard it before, filled with a raw, breathtaking vulnerability. "And it isn't an apology for the past."

He stepped closer, lifting my hand, his eyes locking onto mine with an intensity that made my heart leap into my throat.

"When you stepped down from that pedestal in the ballroom, wearing that torn sleeve, and stood up to Victor Hale... I knew I was looking at the only woman in this world strong enough to stand by my side. Not behind me. Not beneath me. Beside me."

He slid the yellow diamond onto my finger. It fit perfectly, warming against my skin.

"Be my Don," Lucian whispered, bringing my hand to his lips, kissing my knuckles softly. "Rule this house with me. Rule this city with me."

Tears of pure, overwhelming joy spilled over my cheeks, catching the morning light like diamonds.

May you like

"Yes," I wept, throwing my arms around his broad neck, pulling his face down to mine. "Yes, Lucian! Yes!"

Lucian pulled me hard into his arms, his mouth meeting mine in a deep, passionate kiss that tasted of rain, fire, and sweet victory. The world around us vanished—the mafia, the feuds, the wealth—leaving only the two of us standing on the cliff in the dawn light.
