Chapter 10 - The Voss Meridian

Six months later, early June brought warm, emerald-green summer to the Oregon mountains.

The private grounds of the Voss estate were completely transformed. The heavy security posts had been integrated seamlessly into elegant stone gatehouses, the high-voltage fences screened by thick hedges of climbing red roses, and the lake shoreline opened up to white wooden boat docks where two speedboats bobbed in the clear water.

On the grand stone terrace overlooking Lake Crestview, fifty distinguished guests gathered for a private evening reception.

International shipping executives, European diplomats, local community leaders, and senior security officers mingled under a canopy of white silk sails, sipping champagne while a string quartet played softly near the rose gardens.

Vera stood near the stone balustrade, wearing a breathtaking sleeveless gown of dark forest-green silk that complemented her dark hair and the emerald ring glowing on her left hand.

She looked out over the sparkling lake water, holding a glass of sparkling wine, feeling completely at peace in the home that had once felt like a gilded cage.

A pair of strong arms wrapped gently around her waist from behind, and Nikolai pressed a soft kiss to the side of her neck, his dark suit smelling of cedar and crisp summer air.

“You’re avoiding the Swiss ambassador,” Nikolai murmured against her ear, his voice full of quiet amusement.

Vera chuckled softly, leaning her head back against his shoulder. “He’s been talking about international maritime tariffs for forty-five minutes, Nikolai. I promised myself when I married you that I would only fight cartels, not boring politicians.”

Nikolai let out a quiet laugh, his grip around her waist tightening affectionately. “Fair enough. I’ll have Dmitri escort him toward the buffet.”

They stood together in silence for a long moment, watching the sun begin its slow descent behind the snow-capped mountain peaks, painting the sky in vibrant shades of gold, violet, and deep crimson.

Down on the lower lawn, Dmitri stood near the orchard, wearing a dark suit without his tactical gear, holding a glass of lemonade, watching the perimeter with a calm, contented expression.

The estate was quiet, secure, and whole.

“Do you miss the cottage?” Nikolai asked softly, his cheek resting against her hair.

Vera looked toward the plum orchard where her old caretaker’s cottage sat, its windows now converted into a quiet painting studio where she spent her Tuesday afternoons.

“No,” Vera said, turning in his arms to face him, setting her champagne glass on the stone ledge. “The cottage was where I hid from my past, Nikolai. This house... this estate... this is where I live.”

Nikolai looked down into her dark eyes, seeing the complete lack of fear, the fierce devotion, and the absolute love that had transformed his life from an empty empire into a true home.

He reached up, his long fingers gently tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear, before cupping her face in his large, warm hands.

“I spent my entire life building walls to keep the world out,” Nikolai whispered, his voice thick with emotion. “I never knew that the only thing worth building was a life with you.”

Vera smiled, reaching up to kiss him under the glowing golden light of the mountain sunset.

“Then let’s keep building, Mr. Voss,” she whispered against his lips. “We have a lot of summer left.”
