Chapter 8 - The Clean Slate

By 8:00 a.m., the sun was fully risen, casting a bright, crisp autumn light across the mountain valley.
Two black unmarked utility trucks were finishing the cleanup operation at the lumber mill, while federal contacts controlled by Nikolai’s political network secured the perimeter, ensuring no local media or police would ever publish a single word about the events of the night.
The Helian Group’s regional infrastructure had been completely dismantled in less than six hours.
Inside the quiet drawing room of the Voss estate, the roaring fireplace cast a warm, golden glow across the polished oak furniture.
Vera sat on a leather sofa, wrapped in a blanket, while an estate doctor carefully wrapped a soft bandage around her scraped wrist—a minor souvenir from slamming the heavy armored vehicle door.
Nikolai stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, holding a cup of hot black coffee, watching his security team dismantle the temporary barricades on the front lawn.
He had removed his tactical vest, wearing a soft grey cashmere sweater and dark trousers, looking relaxed for the first time in eleven days.
The doctor finished his work, packed his bag, bowed respectfully to Nikolai, and quietly exited the drawing room, closing the heavy mahogany doors behind him.
Silence settled over the warm room.
Nikolai set his coffee cup down on a side table and walked slowly across the Persian rug, stopping near the sofa where Vera sat.
He looked down at her bandaged wrist, his grey eyes softening into a look of tender concern that he no longer bothered to hide behind his professional facade.
“Does it hurt?” he asked softly.
“It’s just a scrape,” Vera said, offering a small, tired smile. “The doctor said it will be completely healed in two days.”
Nikolai sat down beside her on the leather sofa, his broad shoulder brushing against hers. He reached out, his long fingers gently taking her bandaged hand, resting it carefully on his knee.
“Julian Vance and his remaining associates are currently on a private transport vessel heading south,” Nikolai said quietly. “They will never return to North America. The Helian Group has formally relinquished all claim to the northern shipping channels.”
Vera looked into the fire, listening to the quiet crackle of the burning wood. “So it’s really over?”
“It is over,” Nikolai confirmed. “Your name has been erased from every database, every surveillance file, and every intelligence report Vance’s men created. You are completely safe, Vera. Truly safe.”
Vera let out a long, quiet sigh, feeling three years of underlying tension, running, and hidden identity finally melt away from her chest.
She turned her head to look at him, taking in the faint shadow of exhaustion beneath his eyes, the silver at his temples, and the unyielding strength in his jawline.
“What happens now, Nikolai?” she asked softly. “Do I go back to tending your winter roses tomorrow morning?”
Nikolai looked at her for a long, silent moment, his dark grey eyes searching her face with an intensity that made her breath catch in her throat.
“No,” Nikolai said softly, his thumb gently stroking the back of her hand. “The groundskeeper position is permanently closed.”

Vera raised an eyebrow, a small, familiar spark of banter returning to her voice. “Are you firing me again, Voss?”
“I am promoting you,” Nikolai said, his deep voice dropping into that low, thrilling register that set her skin on fire. “To the only position on this estate that matters.”
