Chapter 10 - The Mistress of the House

One year later.

The Grand Ballroom of the Moretti estate was filled once again with lights, laughter, and music. Hundreds of guests—city leaders, business executives, international partners, and loyal staff—gathered beneath the crystal chandeliers for the annual Spring Gala.

At the head of the room, standing beside the grand staircase, sat a massive, beautifully framed oil portrait. It showed a young man with a warm smile, wearing a navy blue captain’s uniform, looking out over the harbor—Danny Dawson, honored forever as an integral part of the company’s history.

I stood near the terrace doors, wearing a breathtaking emerald green silk gown, my dark hair styled in an elegant updo. Around my neck hung a delicate silver necklace, and on my left hand, the sapphire ring glittered beneath the chandeliers.

Mrs. Gable, the head housekeeper, walked over to me carrying a silver tray with two glasses of champagne.

“Everything is ready for the toast, Mrs. Moretti,” she said with a warm, respectful smile.

“Thank you, Mrs. Gable,” I smiled back, taking one of the glasses. “And please, make sure the staff takes a full break after the main course is served tonight. Nobody works double shifts in this house anymore.”

“You’re too good to us, ma'am,” Mrs. Gable said, her eyes shining with genuine affection before bowing her head gently and stepping back toward the kitchen.

I looked out over the crowded ballroom. People were smiling, dancing, enjoying the warmth of a house that was no longer ruled by fear, but by respect and honor.

Strong arms wrapped gently around my waist from behind. Luca pulled me back against his chest, resting his chin on my shoulder, looking out at the room with me.

“What are you thinking about, my love?” Luca whispered in my ear, his voice warm and steady.

I turned slightly in his arms, resting my hand against his cheek, feeling the soft beat of his heart against my palm.

“I was just thinking about how much can change,” I said softly, looking up into his dark eyes. “Two years ago, I was walking through these doors terrified, hiding my injuries, carrying trays for people who didn't even know my name.”

Luca smiled, bowing his head to press a gentle kiss against my forehead. “And now, Claire Moretti, you run the whole house. And the man who owns it.”

I laughed, a rich, happy sound that echoed gently against the terrace glass. “I wouldn't say I run everything.”

“You do,” he insisted with a quiet, loving grin. “And I wouldn't have it any other way.”

He took my hand, locking his fingers with mine—strong, healed, and unburdened—and led me out into the center of the ballroom floor.

The music swelled, the crowd parted with genuine warmth and applause, and as Luca spun me beneath the sparkling lights of the chandeliers, I knew that my long journey through the darkness was finally over. I was no longer the broken maid in the shadows. I was the mistress of the house, the keeper of the truth, and the love of Luca Moretti’s life.

And our story was just beginning.
