Chapter 7 - The Trial of the Betrayers

Three days later.

The private courtroom in the basement of the Moretti family’s downtown estate was lit by dim wall sconces. It was a traditional tribunal—a place where the Chicago underworld settled its internal disputes far away from public judges and journalists.

Seated behind a high wooden bench were five senior captains of the Moretti syndicate—elderly men with gray hair and cold, calculating eyes.

In the center of the room, chained to steel chairs bolted to the floor, sat Marco Rossini and Vanessa Bellini. Marco’s face was bruised, his suit torn, while Vanessa looked haggard, her expensive white dress stained with dirt, her eyes red from days of weeping.

Luca sat at the head of the prosecutor’s table, wearing a crisp black suit, his left arm supported by a dark medical sling beneath his jacket. Beside him sat me, wearing a clean, simple navy blue dress, holding the leather-bound ledger.

The head captain knocked his gavel against the wooden block. “This tribunal of the Moretti family is now in session. We are gathered to hear charges of treason, embezzlement, attempted assassination, and conspiracy against Marco Rossini and Vanessa Bellini.”

The captain looked toward Luca. “Mr. Moretti, present your evidence.”

Luca stood up slowly. He didn't yell. He didn't show anger. His voice was calm, clear, and utterly devastating as he laid out the facts.

“For five years, Marco Rossini used his position as my second-in-command to divert shipping manifests from Dock 42 into private accounts,” Luca began. “When an honest accountant named Danny Dawson discovered the theft, Marco murdered him and buried his body in the Pine Barrens to cover his tracks.”

Vanessa began sobbing quietly, shaking her head. “I didn't know about the murder! I swear I didn't know!”

“Silence!” the head captain barked, striking his gavel.

Luca continued, gesturing toward me. “When Danny’s sister, Claire Dawson, came into my house searching for the truth, Vanessa Bellini discovered her investigation. She trapped Claire in a linen closet, crushed her hand to intimidate her into silence, and continued conspiring with Marco to execute a coup on our wedding night.”

Luca gestured to the large TV monitor mounted on the wall. For the next twenty minutes, the tribunal watched the security camera footage: Vanessa locking me in the closet, the photographs of her stealing the files from the desk, and the audio recording of Marco admitting to the treason at L'Orangerie.

When the presentation ended, the courtroom went completely silent. The five captains exchanged grim looks, whispering among themselves for a brief moment.

The head captain stood up, looking down at the two prisoners with pure disdain.

“Marco Rossini, Vanessa Bellini,” the captain announced, his voice echoing in the cold room. “The evidence presented against you is absolute. By the laws of the Moretti family, treason against the boss is punishable by death and the total forfeiture of all assets.”

Vanessa let out a blood-curdling shriek, collapsing against her chains. “No! Please! Luca, save me! I loved you!”

Marco didn't cry. He looked straight at Luca, his eyes burning with defiance. “Do it yourself, Luca. If you’re man enough, put the bullet in my head yourself.”

Luca walked slowly toward the two prisoners. He stood directly in front of Marco, looking down at his former best friend with a cold, detached expression.

“You’re not worth a bullet from my gun, Marco,” Luca said quietly. “You’ll spend the rest of your life in a black-site prison in Sicily, working in the sulfur mines until your lungs give out.”

He turned his back on them, walking toward where I sat.

“Take them away,” the head captain ordered.

Guards rushed forward, unchaining the two screaming prisoners and dragging them out through the heavy iron doors, closing the chapter on their betrayal forever.

Luca stopped beside my chair, offering his uninjured hand to help me stand. “It’s over, Claire. The truth is out. Your brother has been officially exonerated.”

I looked into his eyes, feeling a wave of relief so overwhelming that my knees felt weak. “Thank you, Luca.”

He smiled softly, squeezing my hand gently. “Now, come with me. There’s one last thing we need to do.”
