Chapter 7 - The New Order

Three months later.
The desert spring had arrived in full bloom across the Arizona valley. The saguaro cacti were crowned with white blossoms, and the air smelled of sweet mesquite and warm sun.
At the Reyes estate, the heavy iron gates remained guarded by Marcus’s elite security force, but the atmosphere inside the stone walls had undergone a complete transformation.
The formal dining room, which had sat dark and unused for six years, was now lit every evening at six o'clock.
On a warm Tuesday afternoon, Damon sat at the head of the massive dining table.
Surrounding him were his primary regional directors—men who had once known him only as a cold, unyielding shadow who spoke in quiet threats and executed orders with lethal precision.
Now, sitting to his right, was Selena.
She wore an elegant cream silk blouse, her dark hair styled in soft, shining waves. She no longer carried a cleaning caddy or duster; she carried a leather iPad containing the operational logistics for the Castillo Foundation—a newly established non-profit funded by thirty percent of the Reyes estate's revenue, designed to provide safe housing and legal aid for victimized women and children across the Southwest.
Sitting beside her, in a custom wooden high chair that looked hilariously out of place next to the three-thousand-dollar antique sideboard, was Ruby.
She was wearing a bright yellow dress with matching bows in her hair, happily eating a bowl of sliced strawberries with a silver spoon.
"The port acquisitions in San Diego are finalized, Damon," Marcus reported, standing near the head of the table with a digital tablet. "The legal transition from protection logistics to commercial freighting is ninety-eight percent complete. Federal auditors cleared our tax filings yesterday morning."
"Good," Damon said, his voice calm, steady, and commanding. "What about the Valdes properties in Sonora?"
"Purchased by the foundation," Selena spoke up, her voice clear, confident, and ringing with authority. "We've already broken ground on the first community shelter near Nogales. The local authorities have pledged full support."
The lieutenants around the table nodded in genuine respect. In three short months, Selena had proven to possess an extraordinary strategic mind—turning former cartel infrastructure into legitimate, community-backed safe havens that provided the Reyes empire with a level of public support and political immunity no amount of blood money could ever buy.
Suddenly, Ruby dropped her silver spoon onto her glass plate with a loud CLINK.
Every lieutenant at the table immediately stopped talking.
Ruby looked up at Damon, her dark eyes wide and serious.
"Mr. Damon?"
Damon immediately turned his head toward her, his stern, intimidating expression instantly dissolving into soft warmth. "Yes, sweetheart?"
"I have a question about the meeting."
The lieutenants smothered quiet smirks. Marcus covered his mouth with his hand to hide a grin.
"Go ahead, Ruby," Damon said gravely. "The floor is yours."
"When are we having the cinnamon cookies?"
A light round of laughter broke out across the formal room—a sound that would have been unthinkable in the Reyes estate six months earlier.
Damon reached out, gently picking up a napkin to wipe a small streak of strawberry juice from her chin.
"Cookies will be served in five minutes, Miss Castillo," Damon said smoothly. "As soon as Mr. Marcus finishes his report."
Ruby nodded solemnly, picking up her spoon again. "Okay. Carry on, Mr. Marcus."

Marcus let out a deep chuckle, shaking his head. "Yes, ma'am."
As the meeting continued, Damon reached beneath the mahogany table, finding Selena’s hand under the wood. Their fingers intertwined, holding tight, a silent understanding passing between them in the bright, sunlit room.
