Chapter 10 - The Rose Garden

Five years later.
The sun was warm over the rear gardens of the Reyes estate.
The old gravel paths had been replaced by lush, green lawns, flower beds filled with yellow roses, and a massive wooden playground featuring swings, slides, and a tiny tea-house built under the shade of a ancient fig tree.
Damon sat on a stone bench near the koi pond—the very pond where Ruby had first wandered up to him six years ago.
He was forty years old now. A few silver threads touched his dark hair at the temples, but his eyes were bright, clear, and filled with deep peace.
Sitting beside him on the grass was his two-year-old son, Leo, who was busily trying to construct a fortress out of smooth river stones.
Down near the playground, nine-year-old Ruby was standing near the tea-house, wearing jeans and a paint-stained T-shirt, carefully guiding a group of younger children from the local community shelter through an art workshop. She spoke with the same supreme confidence, warmth, and fierce leadership that she had possessed since she was three.
Selena stepped out from the patio doors, wearing a simple linen dress, carrying a glass of iced tea for Damon.
She walked across the grass, sitting beside him on the stone bench, leaning her head against his shoulder as they watched their children play in the sunlight.
"What are you thinking about?" Selena asked softly, taking his hand.
Damon looked at his son playing in the dirt, then at Ruby laughing with the children, and finally down at the woman who had transformed his entire existence.
He reached into his pocket, pulling out a small, familiar object.
It was the heavy glass paperweight he kept on his desk.
Enclosed inside the clear glass, perfectly preserved after six years, was the small, dried yellow dandelion Ruby had handed him on the patio when he was sitting alone in the dark.

"I was thinking," Damon murmured, kissing Selena’s hair as the afternoon breeze swept through the rose garden, "that of all the deals I've ever closed, and all the territory I've ever held... this is the only empire that ever mattered."
Selena smiled, wrapping her arm around his waist as the sound of their children's laughter echoed across the bright, sunlit courtyard—a sound that filled every single one of the seventeen rooms, promising that no shadow would ever darken their doorstep again.
