Chapter 5 - The North Side War

By seven o'clock in the morning, the rain had completely stopped, leaving the city wrapped in a crisp, clear autumn fog. Inside the war room of the Marlowe estate, Vincent sat at the head of a long steel conference table surrounded by his eight most loyal tactical commanders.

Nora sat at his right hand, dressed in a comfortable dark sweater and trousers provided by the estate staff. She was no longer wearing her housekeeper uniform.

On the large wall monitors, live surveillance feeds showed the North Side container docks near 103rd Street. Four dark SUVs belonging to the Moretti crime syndicate were parked near the central warehouse, surrounded by a dozen armed men trying to force their way into the computerized manifest office.

"Dominic Moretti thinks I'm compromised," Vincent explained to his commanders, his voice sharp and authoritative. "He believed Samuel's report that I was tied up in an internal execution here at the estate. He's trying to physically seize the harbor manifests before the legal shipping offices open at nine AM."

Leo, Vincent’s head of field operations, leaned forward on his elbows. "We have twenty tactical men standing by two blocks away in unmarked delivery trucks, boss. Give the word, and we sweep the dock in five minutes."

"No," Vincent commanded firmly. "If we start a firefight on the public docks during morning shift, the federal authorities will lock down the entire port. That plays right into Moretti's hands."

He turned his head to look at Nora. "Nora, tell them what you noticed on the manifest feeds three days ago."

The tough tactical commanders all turned their attention to Nora, looking surprised that a former domestic worker was being consulted on a high-level territorial operation.

Nora cleared her throat, leaning toward her desktop monitor. "When I was cleaning the study last week, I saw the medical transport schedules for the harbor district. St. Catherine Hospital maintains a automated emergency medical depot inside Warehouse 4 on those docks. It houses emergency power generators and automated chemical fire suppression systems."

She tapped a key on the laptop, bringing up a blueprint of the dock layout. "If you activate the chemical fire suppression system in Warehouse 4 remotely using the medical override code from St. Catherine’s, it dumps five hundred gallons of non-toxic, high-density fire-retardant foam into the main yard within thirty seconds. It completely blinds everyone in the courtyard without firing a single bullet."

Leo blinked in total amazement, looking from the screen back to Nora. "It floods the entire yard with heavy smoke and foam? They wouldn't even be able to see their own boots."

"And while they are blinded and disoriented," Vincent added with a cold, triumphant smile, "our men step in, secure their weapons, and take all twelve of Moretti's operatives into custody without a single shot fired on public cameras."

The commanders broke into low nods of deep approval. Leo chuckled, shaking his head. "Miss Bennett... you might be the smartest tactical strategist this organization has hired in ten years."

Nora blushed slightly, smiling as Vincent reached under the table to gently squeeze her hand beneath the surface.

"Prepare the sweep," Vincent ordered his men. "Use the medical override. Secure the docks before eight AM."

An hour later, the operation executed with absolute perfection.

The live surveillance monitors showed thick, white suppression foam pouring out from the high vents of Warehouse 4, completely engulfing the Moretti SUVs in a dense, suffocating cloud. Within four minutes, Vincent’s tactical teams moved through the foam with infrared goggles, disarming and securing all twelve rival operatives before they even realized what had hit them.

By 8:30 AM, the North Side docks were fully secured, the Moretti intrusion completely crushed, and the three million dollars in bearer bonds returned safely to the estate's central vault.

In the master study, Vincent stood by the high windows, watching the morning sun cut through the lingering fog over Lake Michigan.

Nora stepped up beside him, holding two warm mugs of coffee. She handed one to him, leaning her shoulder softly against his arm.

"It's over," she whispered quietly.

"The war on the docks is over," Vincent corrected softly, taking a sip of his coffee. "But our story is just beginning, Nora."

He turned to face her, setting his mug down on the windowsill. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet-lined box, opening it to reveal an official medical board reinstatement certificate issued by the State of Illinois, bearing her full name: Nora Bennett, Registered Nurse.

Nora gasped, her hand flying to her mouth. "Vincent... how... how did you get this?"

"I had my legal team present the original hospital audit records to the medical board two hours ago," Vincent revealed gently, his gray eyes soft with deep affection. "Dr. Harrison, the administrator who framed you three years ago, was officially arrested by federal agents thirty minutes ago. Your record is completely clear, Nora. Your license is fully restored."

Tears overflowed from Nora’s eyes, shining like diamonds in the morning light. She looked from the paper in the box up to the powerful man who had moved mountains to restore her honor.

May you like

"You didn't have to do this," she wept softly.

"I did," Vincent whispered, pulling her tight into his arms and resting his chin against her soft hair. "Because you gave me back my life twenty-five years ago through your father, Nora. And you gave me back my heart six months ago."
