Chapter 8 - The Gala at the Estate

One month later, the Marlowe estate was illuminated by thousands of twinkling golden lights. The long winding driveway was filled with luxury cars, and the grand marble ballroom—where weeks earlier blood had almost been spilled—was filled with soft orchestral music, sparkling champagne glasses, and high-society guests from across Illinois.
This was not a criminal gathering. It was the annual Winter Charity Gala hosted by the newly established Bennett-Marlowe Foundation, created to fund emergency medical care, legal aid, and financial support for low-income families across Chicago.
Vincent stood near the grand marble staircase dressed in a sharp black tuxedo, holding a glass of sparkling water. Beside him stood Ray Bennett, looking sharp and distinguished in a custom-tailored dark charcoal suit.
"You look good, Ray," Vincent commented with a warm smile.
"I feel good, son," Ray replied, taking a sip of his fruit punch. "First time in thirty years I can look at my phone without worrying about a collection agency calling."
He looked around the magnificent ballroom, taking in the crystal chandeliers, the ice sculptures, and the well-dressed guests laughing near the catering tables.
"To think my little girl is running all of this," Ray said proudly, his eyes glistening. "She really turned this place around, Vincent."
"She saved this place, Ray," Vincent corrected softly. "And she saved me."
The orchestra paused, playing a quiet, elegant fan-fare as the double doors at the top of the grand staircase opened.
Nora stepped out onto the landing.
She looked breathtaking. She wore an off-the-shoulder emerald green silk gown that hugged her curves beautifully, her dark hair styled in an elegant updo with small diamond pins catching the light. Around her neck lay a simple, elegant platinum pendant that matched her engagement ring.
The entire ballroom went silent as guests looked up at the future Mrs. Marlowe.
Vincent walked to the bottom of the stairs, extending his hand up toward her as she descended the marble steps. Nora placed her hand in his, her face radiating bright, joyful warmth as she stepped onto the ballroom floor beside him.
"You look magnificent, my love," Vincent whispered softly into her ear.
"Not so bad yourself, Mr. Marlowe," she teased gently, winking at him.
Vincent walked with her to the small podium set up near the orchestra, tapping his glass lightly with a silver spoon to gather the crowd's attention.
"Good evening, everyone," Vincent spoke into the microphone, his deep baritone carrying clearly through the hall. "Welcome to the Marlowe estate. For decades, this house was known as a place of cold authority and quiet doors. But tonight, we open a new chapter."
He looked down at Nora, holding her hand tightly in his.
"Tonight, we officially announce the creation of the Bennett-Marlowe Foundation," Vincent declared. "Our first initiative is a twenty-million-dollar grant to provide free emergency medical treatment and legal protection for families in need across North Chicago."
The crowd broke into enthusiastic applause, board members, civic leaders, and hospital representatives clapping warmly.

"And finally," Vincent added, his gray eyes shining with fierce, proud love, "I want to announce my upcoming marriage to the extraordinary woman standing beside me—Nurse Nora Bennett, the true heart and soul of this house."
The applause grew even louder, cheers echoing off the vaulted marble ceiling. Nora smiled through happy tears, leaning up on her toes to press a gentle kiss to Vincent's cheek as the orchestra resumed playing a joyful waltz.
