Chapter 2 - The Weight of the Bloodline

Preston’s fingers uncurled slowly from my arm. He stepped back, adjusting the cuffs of his charcoal suit jacket, attempting to regain his dominant posture.

"Dr. Vance," Preston said, his tone shifting into a calculated, professional smoothness. "I wasn't aware you were in the building today. This is an internal family matter between my wife and me—"

"You don't have a family, Preston," Julian interrupted, stopping two feet from him. My uncle didn't raise his voice; he didn't need to. The authority in his tone was absolute, born from forty years of holding power over boardrooms and surgical theaters alike. "You have an empire built on your father’s debts, a mistress who lacks basic public decency, and a pending lawsuit that is about to dismantle every asset you think you own."

Savannah’s mouth opened in indignation. "How dare you speak to Preston like that! Do you know who my father is? Arthur Reed will have your position as director—"

Julian didn't even turn his head toward her. He raised his left hand, flicking two fingers in the air.

The largest of the four men behind him—a giant of a man with a scarred jaw—stepped forward, placing himself directly between Savannah and my uncle.

"If Arthur Reed steps foot on this floor without my written authorization," Julian said coldly, "I will pull the funding for his research foundation before the market opens tomorrow morning. Now, close your mouth, young woman, before I have hospital security escort you to the precinct for physical assault."

Savannah went completely silent, her pale cheeks flushing a deep, embarrassed red. She looked at Preston for help, but Preston was staring at Julian with a mixture of growing panic and fierce calculation.

"Julian," Preston said, dropping the corporate facade. "Emily and I are in the middle of divorce mediation. She has been uncooperative regarding the prenuptial agreement—"

"The prenuptial agreement your legal team coerced her into signing while her father was on his deathbed?" Julian countered, his gray eyes narrowing. "The agreement that my legal department has been reviewing for the past forty-eight hours?"

Preston went stiff. "What are you talking about?"

Julian finally turned his attention to me. The harshness in his face melted away into a quiet, profound tenderness as he reached out and took my cold hands in his broad, warm palms.

"Are you all right, Emily?" he asked softly.

"The baby moved," I whispered, leaning slightly into his side. "She’s okay, Julian. But... it hurts."

"Nurse Vance," Julian said, his head turning toward the nurse who was still standing nearby with an IV kit. "Prepare Trauma Suite 4 immediately. I want Dr. Arisaka on the ultrasound, and I want a full diagnostic panel run within fifteen minutes."

"Right away, Dr. Vance," Nurse Vance said, hurrying toward the double doors at the end of the corridor.

"Wait just a minute!" Preston interjected, taking a step toward us. "I am the child's father. I have a right to be in the room for any medical procedures involving my daughter."

Julian turned around slowly. He towered over Preston by three inches, his frame broader and far more imposing despite the age difference.

"You lost your rights the moment you allowed this creature," Julian said, gesturing vaguely toward Savannah, "to lay a hand on my sister's daughter. Frank."

The giant security guard stepped forward. "Yes, Dr. Vance?"

"Mr. Hartwell and Miss Reed are barred from the fifth floor," Julian ordered flatly. "If they refuse to leave the building within five minutes, have the campus police arrest them for trespassing and disorderly conduct. Issue a formal trespass notice to the Hartwell Global board of directors as well."

"You can't do this, Vance!" Preston shouted, his voice finally losing its polished edge as Frank took a firm step toward him. "I own sixteen percent of the medical center's holding stock!"

"And I own sixty-two percent," Julian replied without looking back.

He wrapped his arm gently around my shoulders, guiding me through the double doors toward the secure trauma wing.

"Julian," I murmured as the doors swung shut behind us, cutting off the sound of Preston’s rising argument in the hallway. "I didn't think you would come."

"Your mother called me two days ago, Emily," Julian said, his voice thick with an emotion he rarely showed. "She told me what he was doing to you. She told me about the credit cards, the isolation, the way he was trying to force you into a quiet settlement."

He stopped in the clean, quiet hallway of the trauma unit, turning to look down at my face.

"I let your father separate our family twenty years ago because of pride, Emily," my uncle said quietly. "I will not let a second-rate corporate parasite ruin my niece's life. You are a Vance. It’s time Preston Hartwell remembered what that means."
