Chapter 5 - The Glass Castle Creaks

The main lobby of St. Catherine’s Medical Center was an impressive expanse of white marble, floor-to-ceiling glass, and high architectural arches.
Arthur Reed stood near the central information desk, his face red, his expensive silver hair slightly disheveled. He was sixty-two, a man accustomed to having his phone calls answered on the first ring by senators and city council members. Beside him stood Savannah, her eyes swollen from crying, wrapped in her white coat like a defensive shield. Preston stood three feet away, furiously pacing back and forth while typing on two phones at once.
"Where is Vance?!" Arthur bellowed, his voice echoing off the marble walls, drawing the attention of dozens of visitors and staff members. "I want the director down here now!"
"You don't need to shout, Arthur," Julian’s voice carried smoothly across the lobby as he stepped off the private executive elevator. "The acoustics in this building were designed for healing, not temper tantrums."
Arthur spun around, his finger pointing aggressively at my uncle. "Julian! What the hell is the meaning of this? Your security guards put hands on my daughter! They threw her out of the fifth floor like a criminal!"
"She is a criminal, Arthur," Julian said calmly, stopping ten feet from the group. Frank and three other guards took their positions behind him, their posture relaxed but ready. "She committed a felony assault on a patient in my hospital. In fact, she did it right in front of camera bay seven."
Preston stopped pacing, his eyes snapping to Julian. "Julian, let's be reasonable. Savannah made a mistake. She was emotional. We can handle this privately—a generous financial settlement for Emily, an official apology—"
"A financial settlement?" Julian interrupted, his dark gray eyes locking onto Preston with terrifying intensity. "Preston, you seem to be laboring under the delusion that my niece needs your money."
"She doesn't have a dollar to her name!" Savannah blurted out, her voice high and shrill. "Preston blocked her accounts three days ago! She was wearing clothes from Target, for God's sake!"
Julian looked at Savannah with a look of cool, detached pity.
"My niece spent the last three years living modestly because she believed in supporting her husband’s career," Julian said smoothly. "She did not realize that her husband was a spineless coward who used her kindness as a license for cruelty. But as of eight o'clock this morning, the Vance Family Irrevocable Trust has opened a private account in Emily’s name."
He looked back at Preston.
"An account funded with fifty million dollars in liquid capital," Julian added flatly.
Preston went completely still. His hands froze over his phone screens. "What?"
"You thought you were isolating a helpless woman, Preston," Julian continued, taking a slow step closer. "You forgot that Emily’s mother was Eleanor Vance—the co-founder of Vance Energy. The assets your legal team spent six months trying to strip away were nothing compared to the trust that matures on her thirty-first birthday next month."
Arthur Reed looked at Preston, his sharp business instincts immediately picking up on the shift in power. "Preston... what is he talking about?"
"He's trying to intimidate us, Arthur," Preston insisted, though his voice lacked conviction, his face visibly turning pale. "The Vance Trust has been inactive in Dallas real estate for a decade—"
"Because I preferred privacy, Preston," Julian cut in. "But privacy is a luxury I am happy to sacrifice to destroy you."
My uncle turned his gaze back to Arthur Reed.
"Arthur," Julian said softly. "At four o'clock today, Marcus Thorne will file formal papers naming Savannah as a primary defendant in a civil lawsuit for physical assault and intentional infliction of emotional distress. At the same time, the District Attorney’s office will receive a high-definition video of the incident."
Arthur’s face paled. "Julian, wait—Savannah is twenty-six! A felony charge will ruin her entire future!"
"She should have thought about her future before she raised her foot against a pregnant woman," Julian replied coldly. "Now, take your daughter and get out of my hospital. If any of you attempt to contact Emily, or if I see a single leak about her medical status in the press, I will release the raw video feed directly to the local news stations before the five o'clock broadcast."
May you like
"You wouldn't dare," Preston whispered. "The scandal would affect Emily, too."
"Emily is under my protection now, Preston," Julian said, turning his back on them. "A scandal only hurts the man who has something to hide."
