Chapter 4 - The VIP Suite Confrontation

An hour later, dressed in a sharp black wool coat over my hospital clothes, holding Hope securely in a front-facing baby carrier against my chest, I walked down the marble corridor of the second floor.
Dr. Cole, Arthur Pendelton, and two imposing private security guards walked right behind me.
The entrance to VIP Suite 201 was guarded by two hospital security staff, but when they saw Dr. Cole and Arthur holding a court-issued access order, they quickly stepped aside, refusing to get caught in the crossfire.
I pushed open the heavy mahogany doors of VIP Suite 201.
The suite was breathtakingly luxurious—more like a five-star hotel penthouse than a hospital room. Velvet sofas, crystal chandeliers, massive flower arrangements filling every corner, and champagne chilling in silver buckets.
Sitting on the edge of a plush king-sized bed was Serena Hale. She was dressed in a white silk robe, her styled blonde hair cascading over her shoulders, holding a bundle wrapped in a pale blue blanket. Sitting beside her, his arm wrapped affectionately around her waist, was Ethan Vance. Standing near the window, sipping a cup of tea from a porcelain saucer, was Margaret.
The joyous atmosphere in the room died instantly the moment the door slammed shut behind us.
Ethan jumped up from the bed, his face twisting into a mixture of anger and shock. "Claire?! What the hell are you doing in here? You are trespassing!"
"This is a private suite, you uncultured girl!" Margaret snapped, setting her tea cup down so hard the porcelain cracked. "Security! Get her out!"
"My security guards are standing outside the door, Margaret," Arthur Pendelton announced calmly, stepping into the room. "And as the court-appointed legal counsel for Mrs. Claire Vance, she has every legal right to inspect hospital premises funded by joint marital assets."
Serena pulled the blue blanket tighter around her baby, looking at me with wide, calculated eyes. "Claire... please. I know you're upset, but I’ve just given birth. My stress levels—"
"Save your dramatic act, Serena," I interrupted, my voice ringing out with cold authority as I took three steps into the room. "You’ve spent five years playing the delicate victim while taking my husband’s money and using offshore clinics to steal my life."
"Claire, don't talk to her like that!" Ethan barked, stepping between me and Serena. "Serena had nothing to do with what happened upstairs! I made the executive decisions!"
"Yes, you did," I said, looking Ethan dead in the eye. "You made the executive decision to leave your daughter dying in a pool of blood while you bought gold balloons and white orchids for your mistress."
"Hope is fine!" Ethan yelled defensively. "Look at her! She’s right there in that carrier! You're making a massive fuss over a routine labor complication!"
A sharp, collective gasp echoed from Dr. Cole behind me.
"A routine complication?" Dr. Cole stepped forward, pulling out a color printout of Hope's infant brain scan. "Mr. Vance, your daughter went into full cardiac arrest for six seconds! If I had not performed an emergency bedside C-section without proper anesthesia, your daughter would be dead! You left her to die!"
Ethan flushed red, glancing nervously at the window where a flashbulb suddenly popped from a high-powered lens across the street. "This is an internal family matter! Claire, take your lawyer and get out before I ruin you in court!"
"Ruin me?" I let out a soft, mocking laugh that made Ethan flinch. "Ethan, you haven't checked your personal banking portal in the last twenty minutes, have you?"
Ethan’s brow furrowed. He slowly reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone.
"As of nine o'clock this morning," Arthur Pendelton declared, pulling an injunction order from his briefcase, "the New York Supreme Court granted an emergency freeze on all joint accounts, investment funds, and corporate credit lines associated with Ethan Vance, pending the resolution of Clause 14-B of your prenuptial agreement."
Ethan’s thumb swiped frantically across his phone screen. His eyes widened in absolute, terrifying horror as screen after screen displayed bold red text: ACCOUNT FROZEN BY COURT ORDER.
"What... what is this?" Ethan stammered, his confidence evaporating into dust. "My liquid assets... my private equity portfolio..."
"Frozen," I said cleanly. "Every single dollar you used to pay for Serena’s VIP suite, her offshore IVF treatments, her Malibu beach house, and those ridiculous orchids has been locked under suspicion of marital embezzlement."
"Ethan!" Serena shrieked, clutching her baby. "What does she mean frozen? What about my recovery villa in Hamptons? You said the deposit cleared!"
"Shut up, Serena!" Ethan shouted, clutching his head as sweat poured down his forehead. He turned back to me, his hands shaking. "Claire... Claire, listen to me. We can talk about this! You can't freeze my accounts! I have payroll for Saint Jude's executive staff due on Friday!"
"Then I suggest you ask your mother for a loan," I replied coldly, glancing over at Margaret, whose face was so pale she looked like a ghost. "Oh, wait. Margaret can't help you either."
Margaret snapped her head toward me. "What did you say?"
Arthur smiled faintly. "Mrs. Margaret Vance, as a co-signatory on Ethan’s executive trust at Saint Jude, you have been named as a co-defendant in a fifty-million-dollar corporate fraud and child endangerment lawsuit. The hospital board is currently holding an emergency vote to strip both you and Ethan of your seats on the board of directors."
"You can't do this!" Margaret screamed, dropping her composure entirely and lunging toward me. "The Vance family built this city! You are a nobody! A middle-class nobody my son pitied!"
My security guard immediately stepped between us, shoving Margaret back so hard she stumbled against the velvet sofa.

"I might have been nobody when I walked into this hospital, Margaret," I whispered, leaning down so my face was inches from hers. "But when I walk out, I own everything your family ever built. Including the name on that hospital building."
I turned on my heel, holding Hope tightly against my chest, and walked out of VIP Suite 201, leaving behind the screaming voices of Ethan, Serena, and Margaret echoing through the golden hallways of their shattered empire.
