Chapter 5 - The Web of Deceit

The war did not end in VIP Suite 201; it expanded into every corner of Manhattan society.
Over the next two weeks, Arthur Pendelton and his team of forensic accountants tore through Ethan’s financial history like a hurricane. What they uncovered went far beyond a simple extramarital affair.
Sitting in Arthur’s high-rise office overlooking Wall Street, nursing a hot cup of tea while Hope slept peacefully in her stroller beside me, I read through the thick stack of financial audits.
"Ethan didn't just use his personal money to fund Serena’s life, Claire," Arthur explained, tapping his pen against a ledger. "Over the past three years, Ethan has been systematically siphoning funds from Saint Jude’s Charitable Foundation—money intended for pediatric oncology research and low-income medical aid."
My stomach turned. "He stole from pediatric charity accounts?"
"Over twelve million dollars," Arthur revealed. "He funneled the cash through a network of shell companies in the Cayman Islands, managed by a shady legal firm that specializes in hiding assets from spouses during divorces. He used that stolen money to buy Serena’s Malibu mansion, pay for her secret IVF treatments, and secure a thirty-percent stake in a private luxury medical clinic in Los Angeles where he planned to move after divorcing you."
"He planned to abandon me entirely," I realized, the pieces finally falling into place. "He was going to use the prenuptial agreement to throw me out with half a million dollars, claim I was an unfit mother due to 'postpartum depression,' take Hope away from me, and move to LA with Serena and their son."
"Exactly," Arthur confirmed grimly. "That’s why he wanted Dr. Cole to stall your delivery. If Hope had suffered brain damage or severe complications during birth, Ethan could have argued in court that you were incapable of caring for a special-needs child, stripping you of custody while securing total control over your trust funds."
I gripped the arms of my chair so hard my nails dug into the leather. The sheer evil of his plan was breathtaking. Ethan hadn't just been indifferent to our child’s life; he had actively seen her distress as an opportunity to destroy me.
"Where is Ethan now?" I asked, my voice deadly quiet.
"He’s staying at his mother's estate in Westchester," Arthur replied. "He tried to enter Saint Jude’s executive offices yesterday morning, but the board had security escort him off the property. The board has officially appointed an interim COO, and they have opened a formal criminal investigation into his financial records."
Suddenly, my phone buzzed on the mahogany desk.
The screen showed an unknown caller ID, but I recognized the number immediately. It was Ethan’s personal mobile line.
I clicked speakerphone. "Speak, Ethan."
"Claire..." Ethan’s voice sounded ragged, stripped of all its former confidence and swagger. He sounded like a man drowning in deep water. "Claire, please... don't hang up. I need to talk to you. Alone."
"We have nothing to say to each other, Ethan," I said coldly. "Any communication goes through Arthur."
"Claire, please!" Ethan begged, his voice cracking with desperation. "They're going to arrest me! The federal prosecutors called my lawyer an hour ago! They are preparing an indictment for wire fraud and embezzlement! You have to drop the civil lawsuit! If you drop the lawsuit, the federal prosecutors won't have the paper trail they need!"
I let out a soft, merciless laugh. "You want me to save you from prison, Ethan? The man who stood in my labor room and ordered the doctors to let my child die?"
"I was stupid! I was confused!" Ethan pleaded frantically. "Serena was manipulating me! She told me she was having complications! She threatened to tell the media about the IVF if I didn't come downstairs! I didn't mean to hurt Hope! I love Hope, Claire! She’s my daughter!"
"Do not say her name," I snarled, my voice shaking with raw fury. "You don't get to speak her name. You traded her life for an orchid cart and a mistress’s smile."
"Claire, if I go to prison, the Vance family name is destroyed!" Ethan screamed through the phone, losing his mind. "Hope will carry the shame of a felon father for the rest of her life! Is that what you want for her?!"
"Hope will grow up knowing that her mother destroyed the monster who tried to hurt her," I said, every word dripping with lethal precision. "And as for the Vance family name... I’m going to wipe it off the front of that hospital before the year is over."
I clicked the red button, ending the call, and tossed the phone onto the desk.

"Arthur," I said, looking up at my attorney. "Call the federal prosecutors. Tell them we are handing over the complete, unredacted financial audits of Saint Jude Memorial immediately."
Arthur smiled, picking up his desk phone. "With pleasure, Claire."
