Chapter 4 - The Contract of Protection

Harper stared at Lorenzo as if he had spoken in a foreign language. "What... what are you talking about?"
Lorenzo walked to the head of the table, picking up a gold fountain pen and a freshly printed two-page document. He slid it across the mahogany toward her.
"A legal marriage of convenience," Lorenzo stated calmly, as if discussing a routine business acquisition. "Six months. You receive full legal protection under the Romano name, access to my legal team, and a stipend that will completely clear your brother's debts."
Harper’s mind reeled. "And what do you get out of this? Why would a billionaire crime boss marry his maid?"
Lorenzo walked over to the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the ocean, his hands clasped behind his back.
"The commission that oversees my legitimate corporate enterprises requires stability," he explained flatly. "My late father's council believes I am too reckless, too cold, and unfit to retain control of the shipping ports without a stabilizing presence. A quiet, sudden marriage presents the image of a settled, respectable head of the family."
He turned back to look at her, his dark eyes intense.
"You need a shield from the O'Connors. I need a quiet, manageable wife who will not ask questions about my business. You sign this paper, and your brother's debt disappears today."
Harper looked down at the contract. The terms were straightforward: she would move into the master suite, attend public functions at his side when required, and maintain total discretion. In exchange, she would be completely safe, financially secure, and free to leave after six months with a clean identity.
"And if I refuse?" Harper asked softly.
Lorenzo’s expression remained unreadable. "Then you pack your bag, leave my estate, and handle the O'Connor loan sharks on your own."
The choice was no choice at all. It was the illusion of options provided by a master strategist. Harper picked up the heavy gold pen. Her hand trembled, but she pressed the nib to the paper and signed her name alongside his sweeping signature.
Lorenzo walked over, picking up the signed document with a satisfied nod.
"Pack your things from the staff quarters," he instructed. "Mrs. Gable will move you into the master wing this afternoon."
"Lorenzo," Harper called out as he turned to leave. It was the first time she had used his given name without a title.
He paused in the doorway, glancing over his shoulder.

"Are we really going to act like we are married?" she asked, her voice small.
Lorenzo looked at her, his gaze lingering on her soft features. "To the rest of the world, Harper, you are the most precious thing in my life. And in my world, people do not touch what belongs to Lorenzo Romano."
