Chapter 9 - The Final Betrayal

Happiness in the underworld was always a fragile, dangerous luxury.
Three months into their marriage, as winter began to set over the Atlantic coast, an internal threat emerged from within the Romano ranks.
Felix, the underboss who had resented Harper from the very first day, could not accept the transformation of his leader. He believed Lorenzo had grown weak, distracted by a woman, and unfit to rule the syndicate.
Working in secret with bitter remnants of the O'Connor family, Felix planned a coup to eliminate Lorenzo and seize control of the East Coast ports.
It happened on a snowy Friday night.
Lorenzo was away at an emergency meeting in Brooklyn—a meeting orchestrated by Felix as a trap.
Harper was resting in the master bedroom when the estate's alarm system suddenly began to blare. The red emergency lights flashed across the ceiling, and the deafening sound of automatic gunfire echoed from the main entrance downstairs.
Harper gasped, jumping out of bed.
The bedroom door burst open, and Mrs. Gable ran inside, her face pale with terror.
"Mrs. Romano!" Mrs. Gable gasped, grabbing her arm. "It's Felix! He brought armed men through the side gates! He's clearing the house!"
Before Harper could react, heavy footsteps echoed in the hallway. Felix stepped into the master suite, holding a silenced pistol, his face twisted into a cruel grin. Three heavily armed men flanked him.
"Mrs. Romano," Felix sneered, stepping over the threshold. "Or should I say, the maid who ruined this family."
"Felix..." Harper backed away toward the fireplace, her hands shaking. "What are you doing? Lorenzo will kill you for this!"
"Lorenzo is currently trapped in a warehouse in Brooklyn surrounded by twenty shooters," Felix laughed darkly. "He won't be coming back. And once I get rid of you, I'm taking control of this estate."
Felix raised his pistol, aiming it directly at Harper's chest.
CRASH!
The floor-to-ceiling balcony windows shattered into a million pieces as a heavy black rope swung inside.
A shadow moved with terrifying speed. Lorenzo smashed through the glass, landing gracefully on the hardwood floor like a lethal storm. Before Felix could even turn his head, Lorenzo raised his Sig Sauer and fired three rapid shots.
THUD! THUD! THUD!
Felix’s three enforcers collapsed to the floor instantly.
Felix gasped in terror, spinning around, but Lorenzo was already upon him. Lorenzo grabbed Felix’s wrist, twisting it until the bone snapped with a sickening CRACK, sending Felix’s gun flying across the room.
Lorenzo grabbed Felix by the throat, lifting the grown man off his feet and slamming him brutally against the stone fireplace.
"You thought you could touch my wife?" Lorenzo roared, his dark eyes burning with demonic fury.
"Lorenzo... please!" Felix choked out, blood spilling from his lips. "I did it for the family—"
Lorenzo didn't let him finish. He drew a sleek titanium blade from his belt and drove it cleanly through Felix’s heart.
Felix gasped once, his body going limp as Lorenzo released his grip, letting the traitor's body collapse onto the hearth.
Lorenzo stood over the body, breathing heavily, his suit stained with snow and blood. He turned slowly, his lethal gaze softening the instant his eyes landed on Harper.

Harper ran across the room, throwing her arms around his neck, sobbing uncontrollably against his chest. Lorenzo dropped his blade, wrapping his arms around her tightly, burying his face in her hair.
"I am here, Harper," Lorenzo whispered hoarsely, his hands trembling as he held her. "I will always come back for you."
