Chapter 10 - The Queen of Grayhaven

Six months later.

The spring rain had given way to a brilliant, golden sun over the northern shoreline of Wren Harbor.

Where mud and rusted construction scaffolding had once sat, a magnificent grand opening was taking place. The Eleanor Vance Waterfront Park was filled with hundreds of Grayhaven residents—children running through the fountain plazas, families picnicking on the manicured lawns, and old union workers sitting on stone benches, looking out over the clear blue water.

Near the central pavilion stood a bronze statue of Eleanor Vance, her chin held high, holding her iron crowbar like a sceptre.

Mireia stood at the edge of the overlook, wearing a tailored cream-colored suit, her dark hair blowing gently in the sea breeze.

She looked out over the park she had built, feeling a deep, abiding peace settling into her soul. Her family was closer now, humbled and restored. Her sister Alyssa was managing the park’s community arts initiative. And her own name was spoken across Grayhaven not with pity, but with profound respect.

Footsteps echoed softly behind her on the wooden deck.

She didn't need to turn to know who it was. The subtle scent of cedarwood, fine tobacco, and rain always announced his presence.

Darius wrapped his arms around her waist from behind, pulling her back against his broad chest. Mireia leaned back into him naturally, closing her eyes as his warmth washed over her.

"The opening ceremony was a triumph," Darius whispered against her hair. "The Mayor is claiming it was his idea, of course."

"Let him," Mireia laughed softly, turning in his arms to face him. "We know who built it."

Darius looked down at her, his hands resting gently on her hips. In his dark eyes, there was no coldness, no severity—only an endless, devotion that had grown stronger with every passing day.

"I have a question for you, Mireia," Darius said, his voice dropping into a tender, serious register.

"Oh?" She smiled, reaching up to adjust the lapel of his tailored jacket. "The king of Grayhaven has questions?"

Darius reached into his breast pocket and pulled out a small, dark velvet box.

Mireia’s breath caught in her throat. Her heart began to beat a rapid, joyful rhythm against her ribs.

Darius opened the box.

Inside sat a brilliant, flawless emerald-cut diamond ring, set in platinum, surrounded by intricate silver filigree that matched the thorned vines tattooed on his wrists. It was not delicate. It was bold, majestic, and built to last a hundred lifetimes.

"For six years, a fool made you feel like you were a placeholder," Darius said, his eyes searching hers with absolute sincerity. "I don't want to give you a ring to keep you quiet, Mireia. I want to give you a ring that tells this entire city you are the only woman I will ever choose."

He lifted the ring from the velvet box, looking down into her eyes.

"Mireia Vance Dalton," Darius murmured softly. "Will you rule this city with me?"

Mireia looked at the ring, then up at the man who had stood up for her when she was broken, who had honored her grandmother's legacy, and who had loved her with an unyielding, fierce devotion.

She extended her left hand, her black onyx signet gleaming in the sun.

"Put it on my finger, Darius," Mireia whispered, a radiant, beautiful smile lighting up her face. "And let's show this city how we rule."

Darius slid the platinum ring onto her finger beside the onyx signet—a perfect match of power and devotion. He pulled her close, his mouth meeting hers in a deep, passionate kiss that sealed their legacy forever under the open sky of Grayhaven.
