Chapter 9 - The Sovereign’s Verdict

Caleb slumped forward in his chair, the final pillar of his greed collapsing into dust. He looked up at her, his eyes hollowed by total defeat.
"Why, Mireia?" he whispered, his voice cracking. "I gave you six years..."
"You gave me six years of crumbs," Mireia said, leaning down until her face was inches from his. "You made me feel like I was taking up space in my own life. You thought I was weak because I was kind, Caleb. You forgot whose blood runs in my veins."
She straightened up, turning her back on him completely.
She walked to Darius, who stood near the trailer door, watching her with a quiet, fierce pride that made her skin tingle.
"Take him to the train station," Mireia told Marcus calmly. "Give him a one-way ticket to wherever he wants to go. If he ever sets foot in Grayhaven again, let the city deal with him."
Marcus looked at Darius for confirmation. Darius simply nodded once. "You heard the Sovereign."
Caleb was unlocked and led out into the rainy night, his head hanging low, a ghost banished from the city he had tried to conquer.
The site trailer fell silent except for the heavy patter of rain against the corrugated tin roof.
Mireia stood near the center of the room, her hands folded in front of her emerald gown. The adrenaline was fading, replaced by a deep, profound sense of finality. She looked at the blueprint maps of the harbor spread out across the tables—maps that would now bring green space, air, and life to the working-class families of the West End.
Darius stepped close behind her.
He didn't touch her immediately, allowing his presence to wrap around her like a warm, protective mantle.
"You handled that with absolute authority, Mireia," Darius said softly near her ear. "Your grandmother would have been immensely proud."
Mireia turned around to face him.
The bright construction lights outside cast soft diamonds of light through the trailer window, illuminating the sharp, handsome lines of his face.
"And you, Darius?" she asked quietly, looking into his dark eyes. "Are you proud?"

Darius reached out, his long, gloved fingers gently lifting her hand. He brought her left hand up to his lips, pressing a soft, lingering kiss directly onto the black onyx signet ring on her finger.
"I am captivated," Darius murmured, his dark eyes rising to lock onto hers. "I have spent my entire life surrounded by people who wanted power for what it could buy. I have never met a woman who used power simply to set people free."
