Chapter 5 - The Shield of Iron

By seven o'clock the following morning, the sun was rising over Lake Michigan, casting long streaks of pale gold light through the high windows of Room 14.
The hospital had completely transformed.
Two heavy-set security operatives from Price Meridian’s elite private force were stationed outside the door, wearing dark suits and earpieces, blocking all unauthorized visitors. Dr. Sterling had been given strict orders: only Clara Whitmore was allowed to administer medication, handle IV changes, or assist Julian with his physical therapy exercises.
Clara sat in the velvet armchair by the window, holding a heavy gold pen and a stack of legal documents delivered by Julian’s personal attorney, Arthur Gable.
Arthur was a tall, silver-haired man in his sixties who moved with the quiet precision of a high-court judge. He sat across from Clara, watching her with a warm, respectful expression.
"Sign at the bottom of page four, Miss Whitmore," Arthur said softly. "This establishes your employment contract directly with Mr. Price’s private estate. It grants you full medical power of attorney in conjunction with myself, and provides you with complete legal indemnity."
Clara signed her name, her hand shaking slightly as she saw the numbers typed on the crisp white paper: $250,000 annual compensation, full housing stipend, comprehensive prenatal care covered through Northwestern Memorial's private wing.
"This feels like a dream," Clara whispered, setting the pen down. "Or a trap."
"It's neither," Julian’s voice came from the bed.
He was sitting up further today, propped by three thick pillows. His skin was still pale, his body dangerously thin, but the sharpness in his eyes was growing clearer by the hour. A physical therapist had already worked on his legs for an hour, and his speech was becoming smoother, losing its gravelly scratch.
"It's armor, Clara," Julian said, gesturing for Arthur to take the papers. "Victoria tried her first move twenty minutes ago."
Clara looked up sharply. "What happened?"
Arthur took a breath, adjusting his glasses. "Mrs. Price’s legal team filed an emergency petition with the Cook County Probate Court at six AM, requesting a temporary guardianship order over Julian’s estate, claiming he is suffering from post-comatose psychosis and being manipulated by hospital staff."
Clara felt her heart drop. "Manipulated... by me?"
"By name," Arthur confirmed grimly. "They hired a private investigator who has already pulled your credit history, your rental records, and your mother's old medical bills from Joliet. They intend to paint you in court as a predatory, impoverished nurse who took advantage of an incapacitated billionaire."
Clara buried her face in her hands. The humiliation was overwhelming. Her dark secret—her debts, her struggle, her loneliness—was being dragged into the harsh light of a high-stakes corporate court war.
"Look at me, Clara," Julian said, his voice ringing like steel across the room.
Clara slowly lowered her hands and looked at him.
"Let them dig," Julian said, his eyes burning with an intense, unyielding fire. "They think they're digging up dirt on a helpless girl. They don't realize they're digging their own graves. Arthur, bring up the file on Derek Vance."
Arthur pulled a tablet from his leather briefcase and handed it to Clara.
Clara took the screen. Her eyes widened as she read the top document.
"Derek Vance," Arthur explained, "was not a warehouse manager who accidentally met you at a coffee shop, Miss Whitmore. He was hired ten months ago by Marcus Price through a shell consulting firm in Delaware. His explicit instructions were to initiate a relationship with you, gather leverage on St. Anne's night floor staff, and find a way to access Julian’s medical files."
The room seemed to tilt around Clara. Her breath caught in her throat, a wave of nausea washing over her as the terrifying truth settled into her brain.
Derek had never loved her. The dinners, the walks, the sweet words, the sudden disappearance—it wasn't a sad story of a coward running away from a baby.
It was a cold, calculated corporate spy operation.

"They used him," Clara whispered, her tears finally overflowing, hot and furious, down her cheeks. "They used him to get to you... and I brought him into my life..."
"No," Julian said gently, his tone softening into a rare, tender warmth as he looked at her weeping figure. "They tried to use you to destroy me. But instead, you saved my life. And now, Clara... we are going to tear their world apart."
