Chapter 7 - The Grand Strategy

The news of Julian Price’s miraculous awakening and the dramatic arrest of Marcus Price hit the Chicago business world like an earthquake on Monday morning.
The front page of the Chicago Tribune carried a full-spread photograph of Victoria Price being led out of her Gold Coast mansion in handcuffs by federal agents, charged with wire fraud, attempted murder, and corporate conspiracy.
Inside Room 14, the atmosphere had completely transformed.
Julian was fully dressed in a tailored charcoal suit—though he still used a sleek black cane for support—sitting at a makeshift conference table set up near the window. Arthur Gable and three senior board members of Price Meridian were seated across from him, reviewing stacks of emergency corporate resolutions.
Clara sat at the head of the table, wearing a dark green wool dress that softly hugged her frame, carrying herself no longer like a timid night nurse, but like a woman who held the keys to the entire castle.
"The board has unanimously ratified your return as CEO, Mr. Price," the senior director announced, sliding a gold pen across the table. "Victoria’s voting shares have been frozen by court order, and Marcus’s board seat has been permanently revoked."
Julian signed the document with a firm, fluid stroke. "Effective immediately, Arthur will assume oversight of our legal ethics panel. And I am creating a new charitable foundation under Price Meridian."
The director nodded quickly. "Of course, Julian. What will the foundation focus on?"
Julian looked across the table at Clara, his eyes shining with a deep, quiet warmth.
"The Clara Whitmore Maternal Care Initiative," Julian announced clearly. "A fifty-million-dollar endowment dedicated to providing full financial, medical, and legal support for single mothers working in low-income healthcare jobs across Illinois."
Clara gasped softly, her eyes widening in total shock. "Julian... fifty million?"
"It's a starting figure," Julian said, without taking his eyes off her. "No nurse, no caregiver, and no mother in this city will ever have to hide her pregnancy in a dark hospital room because she's terrified of losing her rent."
The directors applauded warmly, taking the signed papers and filing out of the room, leaving Julian, Clara, and Arthur alone in the quiet suite.
Arthur closed his briefcase, standing up with a satisfied smile. "The court hearing regarding the Vance contract is scheduled for two PM, Julian. Derek Vance was apprehended at the Canadian border an hour ago. He has offered a full confession in exchange for a plea deal regarding his role in Marcus’s conspiracy."
Clara looked down at the table, her feelings complex—a mix of old lingering pain and deep, profound relief.
"Does it hurt?" Julian asked softly after Arthur left the room, stepping around the table to stand beside her chair.
Clara looked up at him, reaching out to touch the side of his dark jacket.
"A little," she admitted honestly. "It hurts knowing someone looked at me and only saw an opportunity to break something. But... when I look at what we've built here in four days... it feels like that happened to a different girl in a different life."
Julian leaned down, placing his large, warm hand over hers on the armrest.
"It did happen to a different girl," Julian whispered. "The girl in that life was alone in the dark. The woman in this life has an empire standing behind her."
Clara smiled, a real, radiant smile that lit up her face, reaching up to rest her fingers against his jaw line.
"And what about the billionaire who was asleep?" she teased gently.

Julian offered a soft, rare laugh—a sound that was rich, deep, and full of life.
"He woke up," Julian said, looking into her eyes, "and realized he never wants to go back to sleep again."
