Chapter 10 - The Sovereign's Vow

One year later.

The afternoon sun was warm and bright over Lake Michigan, casting golden light across the manicured gardens of the Ferrante estate.

The wild roses behind the limestone wall had been trimmed and tended to, blooming in rich vibrant shades of crimson and white. The old service trash bins were gone, replaced by a beautiful carved marble fountain where crystal water flowed quietly into a stone basin.

Willow sat on a comfortable wooden bench near the fountain, wearing a soft lavender dress that caught the gentle summer breeze.

In her arms she held a six-month-old baby boy with dark hair, sharp blue eyes, and a healthy, laughing smile.

Beside the bench lay Bruno, the great Neapolitan mastiff, resting his heavy black head on Willow’s foot, occasionally letting out a soft sigh of pure contentment as he watched over the child.

Footsteps sounded on the gravel path.

Willow looked up, a warm, genuine smile lighting up her face.

Veto walked toward them. He had shed his dark suit jacket, wearing a crisp white shirt with rolled-up sleeves. The sharp, lethal edge that had once defined his presence in Chicago was still there, but when he looked at Willow and the child, his eyes softened with an overwhelming, tender devotion.

He sat down on the bench beside her, wrapping his long arm around her shoulders and pulling her close against his side.

"How is he?" Veto asked softly, reaching out with a large, calloused finger to gently tickle the baby’s chin.

The baby let out a bright, bubbling laugh, reaching his tiny hands up to grab Veto’s thumb.

"He’s perfect," Willow said gently, resting her head against Veto’s shoulder. "Dr. Valenti says he’s growing faster than any child he’s examined this year."

"He has Ferrante strength," Veto murmured, a rare, proud smile touching his lips as he held the baby’s tiny hand.

After the fall of the Moretti family, Chicago had entered a period of unprecedented peace under Veto’s absolute rule. Julian had been permanently exiled to a small family estate in Sicily, stripped of all authority, while Willow had officially been named the co-director of the Ferrante Charitable Foundation—an organization dedicated to protecting vulnerable women and children across the Midwest.

"Veto?" Willow whispered softly, looking up at his sharp profile.

"Yes, my love?" he answered, turning his head to look into her clear brown eyes.

"Do you ever think about that day in the rain?" she asked gently. "When you found me crying behind those trash cans?"

Veto reached out, gently cupping her cheek with his hand, his thumb brushing softly over her skin.

"I think about it every day," Veto said softly. "It was the day I found my heart."

He leaned down, pressing his lips gently to hers in a slow, deep kiss that carried all the quiet strength, protection, and devotion he had promised her from the moment he heard her broken whisper in the rain.

The baby gurgled happily in her lap, Bruno gave a heavy, satisfied thump of his tail against the gravel, and above them, the afternoon sun shone brightly over the house that was no longer a fortress of shadows, but a sanctuary of love.
