Chapter 9 - The Fall of Lake Forest

At nine o'clock in the morning, six dark armored SUVs tore through the grand iron gates of Carmine Moretti’s private estate in Lake Forest, Illinois.

The heavy iron gates were blown inward by tactical breach charges, the metallic explosion echoing across the manicured lawns and high pine trees.

Before Moretti’s security detail could react, fifty armed Ferrante soldiers flooded the grounds, securing the perimeter, disarming guards, and locking down every exit with military precision.

Inside the grand living room of the estate, Carmine Moretti stood near the marble fireplace, holding a shot glass of brandy, his hands shaking violently. Beside him stood Enzo Mancini, clutching a firearm, his face pale with horror as the sound of footsteps thundered down the main hallway.

The double doors of the living room were kicked open.

Veto Ferrante walked in.

He was unhurried, calm, and lethal. He held no weapon in his hands; his arms were relaxed at his sides, his dark eyes locked onto Carmine with an absolute, terrifying presence.

Marco and four armed captains stepped in behind him, their weapons raised, securing the room instantly.

"Veto," Carmine stammered, setting his glass down with a loud tremble. "Listen to me... this is a misunderstanding! We can talk! We can negotiate the territory!"

Veto didn't answer. He walked slowly across the oriental rug, stopping five feet from the aged crime boss.

Enzo Mancini panicked, raising his handgun toward Veto’s chest.

POP.

Marco fired a single, swift shot from behind. Enzo screamed as the bullet tore through his shoulder, dropping his weapon and collapsing onto the hardwood floor, groaning in agony.

Veto didn't even look at Enzo. His gaze remained fixed on Carmine.

"You sent two men into my mother's room last night, Carmine," Veto said, his voice a low, gravelly whisper that chilled the room. "You sent them to murder a pregnant woman who was under my roof."

"She was a servant!" Carmine yelled defensively, his old voice cracking with desperation. "She was nobody, Veto! She was ruining the alliance between our families! I did it for the business!"

"In my house," Veto said, stepping closer until he was inches from Carmine’s face, "there are no 'nobodies.' There is only honor, and there is dishonor."

Veto reached out, catching Carmine by the lapels of his expensive suit jacket, leaning in close.

"Your syndicate is finished, Carmine," Veto murmured softly into his ear. "By eight o'clock this morning, your bank accounts were frozen by federal injunctions based on evidence I delivered personally to the Department of Justice. Your captains in New York and Miami have surrendered their territories to my family. You have nothing left."

Carmine’s eyes widened in utter, horrifying realization. "You... you went to the feds?"

"I destroyed you," Veto corrected him coldly. "Because you forgot that a real Don protects the helpless, while a tyrant merely slaughters them."

Veto shoved Carmine backward into his armchair.

Federal agents, led by two armored tactical units, poured through the shattered glass doors of the terrace behind them, their weapons raised, sirens wailing across the Lake Forest estate.

"Carmine Moretti!" a federal agent bellowed. "You are under arrest for racketeering, attempted murder, and conspiracy!"

Veto turned his back on the old man, unbuttoning his suit jacket as he walked calmly past the swarm of federal officers, stepping out into the bright morning sunlight.

"It’s done, boss," Marco said, walking beside him toward the armored SUV.

"Not yet," Veto replied softly, looking toward the Chicago skyline in the distance. "I have a promise to keep."
