Chapter 10 - THE NEW ORDER

Three weeks later, the grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was packed with six hundred of New York’s most elite citizens.

Politicians, corporate titans, foreign dignitaries, and old-money heiresses moved beneath the towering crystal chandeliers, sipping champagne and gossiping about the dramatic collapse of the Whitcomb empire.

Suddenly, the grand doors at the top of the marble staircase swung open.

The herald cleared his throat, his voice echoing through the massive ballroom.

"Announcing Mr. Julian Calder, Mrs. Vivian Calder, and Miss Emma Vance."

The entire room went completely silent. Six hundred heads turned as one toward the top of the stairs.

Julian stood at the center, looking impossibly handsome in a bespoke black tuxedo. On his right was Vivian, looking regal in a silver silk gown.

And on his left was me.

I wore a floor-length gown of deep emerald velvet that hugged my curves before flowing down in a dramatic train. Around my neck sat the legendary Calder Red Sapphire—a massive, sparkling gem surrounded by three carats of diamonds. My dark hair was swept up, revealing my neck and the tiny, barely visible pink line on my right cheekbone.

Julian didn't wait for the crowd to process our arrival. He turned, offered me his arm, and placed his hand gently over mine as we began our descent down the marble stairs.

Gasps flared through the crowd. Whispers erupted like wildfire.

"Is that her?"

"The girl from the estate?"

"Look at the sapphire... that hasn't been brought out of the vault since his grandmother died..."

"She looks like royalty..."

At the bottom of the stairs, several prominent news reporters and socialites immediately moved forward, trying to get closer. Among them was an elderly matriarch who had been close friends with Celeste’s family for decades.

"Julian, dear!" the woman purred, looking at me with a critical, icy eye. "We were all so shocked to hear about the cancellation of your wedding. And now... you bring a new face to the Gala? Who is this young lady? Is she from the Boston Vances?"

Julian stopped walking. He looked down at the woman with a calm, imposing authority that instantly quieted the surrounding crowd.

"This is Emma," Julian announced clearly, his voice carrying effortlessly across the quiet ballroom. "She is the woman who protected my mother when others failed. She is the companion to my family, and the sole mistress of Calder House."

The woman blinked, stunned into silence.

Julian turned his head toward me, his dark eyes melting into an expression of pure, unadulterated devotion that made every woman in the room hold her breath.

He reached up, his fingers lightly brushing the tiny scar on my cheekbone.

"If anyone in this city ever forgets how she earned that mark," Julian said, his tone carrying a soft, lethal promise to everyone listening, "they are welcome to ask me directly."

I looked up at him, my heart full to bursting. The quiet maid who had once tried to remain invisible, who had taken a violent blow to protect an old woman, was gone forever.

In her place stood a woman who was loved, cherished, and protected by the most dangerous man in New York.

Julian leaned down and pressed a warm, lingering kiss to my hand, right over my pulse point.

"Shall we dance, my love?" he asked softly.

"I would love to, Julian," I replied, smiling as I stepped into his arms, leaving the whispers of the city behind us forever.
