Chapter 8 - CONFESSIONS IN THE DARK

I froze behind the hemlock tree, my breath catching in my throat.
Slowly, reluctantly, I stepped out from the shadows of the pine branches and walked down toward the wooden pier. The cool night wind blew across the water, catching my cardigan, but I barely felt it over the pounding of my heart.
Marcus and the other security guards quietly retreated toward the house, giving us absolute privacy.
Julian turned around to face me. The golden moonlight caught the harsh, angular lines of his face, making him look like an ancient, dangerous statue.
"I told you to stay in your room," he said softly, though there was no real anger in his voice.
"I couldn't," I whispered, stopping a few feet away from him on the wooden planks. "I heard what Vance said. He came for me."
"He came for a ghost," Julian corrected, taking a slow step toward me. "He thought he could strike at me through you because he assumed you were weak."
"Am I not?" I asked, looking up at him. "I'm just a distraction in your world, Julian. Your business is collapsing, people are trying to attack your home, and it's all because I stepped in front of your mother."
Julian closed the distance between us in two quick strides. He reached out, his large hands catching my face, his warm palms cupping my cheeks gently, avoiding the tiny bandage.
"Look at me, Emma," he commanded.
I looked up into his dark, blazing eyes.
"My business is not collapsing," he said fiercely. "The Whitcombs were a parasite on my empire, and cutting them off was something I should have done months ago. You didn't cause this war, Emma. You gave me the clarity I needed to end it."
"Julian..."
"I have lived thirty-six years in a world where everyone wants something from me," he continued, his voice thick with raw emotion. "My money, my power, my protection, my name. Celeste didn't care about me—she cared about being Mrs. Julian Calder. But you... you bled for my mother without knowing who I was or what I had."
His thumb brushed softly over my lips, sending an electric shiver straight down my spine.
"You are not a distraction, Emma," he whispered, leaning down until his forehead rested against mine. "You are the only real thing in this entire godforsaken house."
I couldn't breathe. My hands rose involuntarily, coming to rest against his broad chest. Beneath my palms, I could feel the rapid, heavy thudding of his heart—a silent admission that he was just as affected by this moment as I was.
"Julian," I breathed, my voice barely audible over the sound of the river waves. "I'm scared."
"Of Vance?"
"No," I whispered, looking straight into his dark eyes. "Of this. Of you. Of how much I want to stay here with you."
Julian let out a low, ragged sound before tilting his head and pressing his lips to mine.
The kiss was slow, deep, and utterly possessive. It carried the weight of everything that had been building between us over the past week—the quiet looks across the dinner table, the lingering touches, the fierce protection. I melted into him, my fingers tangling in the soft hair at the nape of his neck as he pulled me flush against his body.

When he finally broke the kiss, his breathing was heavy, his lips resting against my temple.
"You are staying, Emma," he murmured against my skin, his arms wrapped securely around my waist. "You are never leaving this house again. Not unless it's with me."
