Chapter 10 - The Sovereign of Enna

One year later.

The Valenti estate in Enna had risen from the ash like a fortress of white stone and dark mahogany. High above the valley, the villa glistened in the morning sun, surrounded by restored olive groves, terraced vineyards, and gardens filled with blooming white roses.

The heavy iron gates bore a fresh coat of black paint, the dragon and olive branch crest polished to a brilliant silver shine.

Inside the grand dining hall, a long oak table was set for a feast. High crystal chandeliers hung from the vaulted ceilings, casting warm light across white linens, silver serving trays, and bottles of dark, rich wine produced from the estate’s own vineyards.

At the head of the table sat Eleonora Valenti.

She wore a dark green silk dress, her dark hair pinned up with silver combs, a simple gold ring bearing the Valenti seal on her right hand. She sat with effortless grace, presiding over her home with the quiet, formidable authority of a true sovereign.

To her right sat Damian Bellacasa, his dark eyes warm as he spoke with the local mayor and regional delegates who had gathered to celebrate the estate’s reopening.

To her left sat an empty chair—a quiet, solemn tribute to her mother and father, whose memory finally rested in peace.

At the far end of the terrace outside, an old man sat in a comfortable wicker chair, a blanket over his knees, sipping a small cup of dark Sicilian coffee.

Vittorio Bellacasa looked out over the green hills of Enna, his aged face peaceful, his black eyes soft as he watched the sun begin its slow descent toward the sea. He no longer carried his ebony cane like a weapon; he held it like a companion.

The doors to the terrace opened, and Nora stepped out, carrying a small tray with a plate of fresh figs and almond cakes.

She walked smoothly across the stone tiles, setting the plate on the small table beside the old patriarch.

"You should be inside, Vittorio," Nora said softly, her voice carrying the warm, rich cadence of the mountains. "The wind is getting cold."

Vittorio looked up at her, a quiet, gentle smile touching his lined lips. He reached out, his trembling hand resting lightly over hers for a moment.

"I spent fifty years running from this island, Eleonora," the old man whispered, looking back out over the peaceful valley. "I thought the ghosts would be waiting for me here with knives."

"And what did you find instead?" Nora asked softly, leaning against the balcony rail beside him.

Vittorio took a deep, clear breath of the mountain air—air that smelled of wild thyme, fresh rain, and burning wood.

"I found peace," Vittorio murmured. "I found a home that was saved by a maid."

Nora smiled, looking out over her kingdom—the mountains, the vineyards, and the future she had built from the ruins of the past.

She was no longer the girl hiding under the floorboards. She was no longer the pathetic maid in the shadows of Chicago. She was Eleonora Valenti—the sovereign of Enna, the woman who had brought an empire to its knees with six words, and the leader who had proven that true power was not measured by the blood you shed, but by the legacy you restored.

As the golden Mediterranean sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in shades of crimson and gold, the estate of Enna stood strong, proud, and forever silent against the storms of the world.
