Chapter 9 - The Return to the Mountain

Three weeks later.

The small mountain town of Enna sat perched high above the valley of central Sicily, surrounded by ancient olive groves, rocky cliffs, and the blue expanse of the Mediterranean sky in the distance.

The ruins of the old Valenti estate stood on the highest ridge—crumbled stone walls, charred timber beams, and wild poppies growing through the cracks in the ancient marble floor where a grand courtyard had once been.

A silver Mercedes sedan wound its way up the narrow dirt road, stopping near the iron gates that still bore the faded family crest of the dragon and the olive branch.

The driver’s side door opened, and Nora stepped out into the warm Sicilian wind.

She wore a simple, elegant ivory linen suit, her dark hair falling loosely over her shoulders, her amber eyes reflecting the brilliant Mediterranean sunlight. She looked completely different from the shy, quiet maid of Saint Lucien. The shadows had left her face, replaced by an calm, unshakeable strength.

She walked through the overgrown courtyard, her heels clicking softly against the old stone floorboards. She stopped at the center of the ruins, where the old wine press had once stood.

The land was quiet, save for the hum of cicadas and the soft breeze carrying the scent of wild thyme and orange blossoms.

Behind her, footsteps sounded on the gravel.

Nora did not draw a weapon. She turned slowly.

Damian Bellacasa stood near the iron gates, dressed in a casual charcoal jacket, carrying a small leather case under his arm. He looked around at the ancient ruins with a sense of quiet reverence.

"You followed me all the way to Sicily?" Nora asked, a faint, amused smile touching her lips.

"My father wanted to make sure you arrived safely," Damian said, walking into the courtyard. "And... I brought something that belongs here."

He opened the leather case, revealing a thick bundle of original legal deeds, stamped by the Italian Ministry of Culture and the regional court of Palermo.

"The entire valley of Enna has been officially transferred to your name," Damian said, handing her the papers. "The Bellacasa family funded the restoration project. The architects arrive tomorrow to begin rebuilding the main villa."

Nora looked down at the documents, her fingers tracing the official seal of her ancestral homeland.

"Your father didn't have to do this," she whispered.

"My father is changing," Damian said, looking out over the olive groves stretching into the valley below. "After you left Chicago, he retired. He gave up the leadership of the council. He spends his days in the garden now, reading old books and talking about the mountain blood."

Damian looked at her, his dark eyes filled with a quiet, genuine emotion.

"He realized that power without honor is just a longer way to die, Nora. You taught him that."

Nora looked out over the valley—the land where her ancestors had walked for five hundred years, the land that had finally returned to its rightful owner.

"And you, Damian?" Nora asked softly, looking up at him. "What did you learn?"

Damian smiled—a real, warm smile that made him look less like a syndicate boss and more like a man who had finally found his purpose.

"I learned that I never want to be on the opposite side of a room from Eleonora Valenti," Damian said smoothly. "And that if the northern territories ever need a partner... the Bellacasa house is ready to serve."

May you like

Nora chuckled—a rich, beautiful sound that echoed through the ancient stone ruins.

"We will see, Damian," she said, turning back toward the view of the valley. "We will see."
